6 Fun Ways To Celebrate Earth Day With Your Family

Earth Day is Saturday! Do you have any special plans to celebrate our planet with your family? If you don’t, I have some great ideas to share. Earth Day is a special day to stress the importance of giving back to the planet we live on. Teach your children to respect and nurture the Earth and you will be making a difference not only in the next generation but our planet as well.

Go on a Litter Walk

Grab some trash bags and gloves and set off around your neighborhood cleaning up the trash that is around. Explain to your kids how littering like this is dangerous to wildlife. As you pass your neighbors encourage them to join in. Before you know it, you will have a parade of trash pickers and as they say; many hands makes the load lighter.

Plant a Garden

Nothing shows your kids where their food comes from better than planting a garden. From seeds or seedlings, they will see the entire process. Let them help with tending and caring for the garden all season. By the time of your last harvest, you will have some very experienced gardeners.

If if is too cold yet to plant by you, plan out your garden with your kids. You can start getting your garden ready by cleaning up last years plant remains, leaves, sticks and other debris. Then break up the soil. You should pick a soil test kit up and test your soil to see what nutrients it is lacking. The better your soil, the better your garden.

If you don’t have land to plant a garden, plant some container gardens or vertical gardens. There are some great ideas for maximizing your space on sites like Pinterest, so check it out.

Plant a Tree

This is a lot of fun, take a ride down to your local nursery and pick out a tree or shrub. Then go home and plant it together. Again, enlist your children to take part in the planting and care of the tree. Explain how the plants and trees give us something we need to live…oxygen.

Start a Habitat Garden

Did you know that our population of pollinators is dwindling? It is, and our food supply depends on bees and butterflies to thrive. Do your part by researching the types of plants you need to create a habitat garden.

The Monarchs main food source in the Milkweed plant but along with that you can plant native grasses, butterfly bushes, bee balm and so much more. There are also butterfly houses and feeders as well as bee houses you can add to help our pollinators. We visited a butterfly house last year with our kids and learned so much.

Start Composting

Do you compost? If not you should. It will not only cut down on your organic household garbage, it will enrich the soil in your garden. It is not hard and you have a lot of options.

There are countertop compost bins you can use to collect your daily vegetable peels, banana skins, egg shells, coffee grounds etc. Then you can take them out to a compost bin or drum. They have nice units you can buy that make it super easy or your can put up some wire fencing and make a bin of your own. You can read more about the process HERE.

Go For a Family Hike:

See the beauty of our planet by taking a family hike. It is good exercise for the body, mind and soul. Pack along a picnic lunch and make a day of it. There are resources for your state where you can find recommendations for great trails. Go somewhere new, you might be surprised at the beauty you find and did not know existed in your state.

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day?

Discover The “Once Upon A Time Bible” and “Storybook Bible” Today #OnceUponATimeBible, #FlyBy

It seems everyone is talking about how they loved Disney’s new Beauty and the Beast live action movie. Fairy tales and Disney Animation are more popular than ever and Zonderkidz wanted to publish a storybook Bible and full-text Bible that would resonate with families and children who love this type of media.

Teaching our kids about the stories in the Bible is easier when the stories are in a format that they are used to, using language they understand. Unlike fairy tales, the stories in these books are the real deal! What a great way to teach my children about real heroes and stories of faith straight from God’s word.

The Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible features captivating illustrations along with a beautiful narrative that draws children in as you read aloud the major stories of the Bible. Stories include: Ruth, Abigail, Esther, The Parable of the Lost Sheep, The Prodigal Son, Mary Magdalene and many more. The Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible is available at Sam’s Club and where books are sold.

The Once Upon a Time Holy Bible starts the way every great story does, with once upon a time. However this hardcover Bible is not full of fairy tales. This New International Reader’s Version (NIrV) translation highlights 6 stories we all know from the Bible and presents them in a way children can relate to and understand.

Each story is told on four pages in full-color, illustrated splendor. Stories include: God Makes Man and Woman, Isaac and Rebekah, Ruth Find Happiness, Queen Esther, Mary and Joseph and an Angel and He Lives! The Once Upon a Time Holy Bible is available in hardcover and pink leathersoft cover where books are sold.

Let me know what you think of these versions of the greatest story ever told!

The Beginner’s Bible is Redesigned and Ready To Inspire a New Generation of Children #TheBeginnersBible #FlyBy #Giveaway

As a parent, I know our kids have a lot of questions and interest about God and Jesus. The Bible is a great book but it can be hard for young children to understand and read. Home Is Where The Heart Is, Especially At Christmas! #BoscovsHolidayHomeTour

This is a sponsored post and I will be compensated as part of the Blog Meets Brand Network. As always my words and views are 100% my own.

boscovs-holiday-home-tour

The holidays are upon us, I love Christmas, especially seeing it through my children’s eyes. I look forward to decorating our home inside and out every year. This year will be different, a few weeks ago a leak in our kitchen wreaked havoc on our lives that will change the way we celebrate this season. Our entire kitchen and basement has to be demoed and all of our belongings are being packed up and put in storage.

It will be a long process. We live in a rural location so there are no hotels nearby. The insurance company paid for a travel trailer to be put on site for us to live while our house is being repaired. This means that we will not be able to decorate the way we usually do. I want to make the holiday season special for my kids but most of my decorations have been packed and brought to a location to be cleaned. Anyway, we are making the best of things and that is why when I was approached with the opportunity to work with Boscov’s on their holiday home tour, it was a big blessing.

boscovs

Recently, we all headed off to Boscov’s and rode the escalator straight up to the Holiday Shop. My kids’ eyes were as wide as my husband’s and mine. There were so many beautifully decorated trees and displays.

A member of the helpful staffed named Linda told me she decorated all the trees and many of the displays.  There were indoor decorations, outdoor decorations, ornaments, village houses and so much more. The first thing that caught our eye was the Santa in Sleigh with Reindeer outdoor display.

boscovs-7

I laughed because it was the same one from the movie Christmas Vacation. My husband said it was a great idea since we can still decorate the outside of our home. We also picked up a vintage looking outdoor lighted Snowman with Pipe.

boscovs-6

I found some cute little cardinal and bluebird shelf sitters and a “Have Faith” block sculpture with a cardinal that coordinated. Cardinals are very special for me so I knew these were going home with me.

boscovs-decorations-3

Then I found 2 Annalee dolls I loved, a mouse ornament and a mouse standing figure.

boscovs-16

boscovs-decorations

Next, I picked up a tablecloth and headed off to find a ceramic tree that is reminiscent of the vintage kind I remember as a kid. I had to decide between green and white and went with the white. The pictures don’t do it justice. I also picked up a beautiful Lenox silver-plated Christmas tree ornament and a train for our village.

boscovs-31

They had so many nice ornaments, we picked out several that we really liked for our tree.

Soon we were ready to go and load our purchases in the car.

boscovs-26

Here is a video of my Boscov’s haul:

The tree makes a cute little display with the other ornaments in the travel trailer.

boscovs-decorations-2

I did get to at least try my tablecloth on my kitchen table before they took it away. I love the vintage look of this tablecloth.

boscoves-table

The train is so detailed and will look awesome when we add a few of our village houses. Our village will be smaller this year but it will still be festive.

boscovs-train-1

The outdoor decorations are very nice and with the new fallen snow they look just fabulous.

The kids really love everything and I guess this all goes to show us that home is where the heart is, especially at Christmas!

Do You Feel Like You Are Failing As A Parent? You Are Not Alone!

Raising children is not for the faint of heart. Have you ever felt overwhelmed, frustrated to the point you lose your temper and yell or scream at your kids? Do you feel at your wit’s ends fighting the same battles, day after day with your children? Is it hard for you to wrap your mind around how they cannot stop doing the things that are getting them in trouble?

frustrated-child

No matter what you do, the same behavior is repeated again and again. Does it leave you so frustrated that you count the hours until bedtime? Do you feel guilty for sometimes not wanting to be around your kids because of how they behave? Do you feel terrible for this and feel you are a failure as a parent? Do you think you must be doing something wrong?

You don’t have to tell me the answers to these questions. If you are a parent, it is safe to say that you nodded your head in agreement to most of these things, maybe even all of them. I want to tell you, that it is okay, you are not the only one. We will fail as parents, many times.

I picked up a really good parenting book the other day. The book is titled, Parenting: 14 Gospel Principals That Can Radically Change Your Family. The author, Paul David Tripp, is the executive director for the Center for Pastoral Life and Care in Fort Worth, Texas. More than that, he is a dad, a dad who has felt those same things.

parenting-book

I will admit when I picked up the book, I expected it to be preachy and written by a man who was a “perfect” parent, who would tell me everything I was doing wrong. I could not have been more wrong. Right from the Introduction, I saw this was a parent I could relate to, one that struggled in the same ways I did. Nothing was sugar-coated, he was real and the pages are full of wisdom. It is real, he writes about situations of parents who are struggling through parenting. If you are like me, you may find their stories very familiar. Sometimes it is nice to know we are not alone.

frustrated-child-crying

One of the things I think will resonate with most parents is the chapter on authority. The author says to never exercise your authority over  your child in an angry, impatient, abusive or selfish way. This means, you do not let your anger at your child’s disobedience control you so you do things you should not. For example, it means that you do not pinch, poke, slap, yank or shove your child. It also means that you do not combine your discipline with berating, condemning or demeaning talk. That means you don’t say things like; “What are you, stupid?” “I can’t believe that you’re my daughter!” and other similar phrases.

mother-angry

He does not say this as a perfect parent who has never done this but as one who openly admits doing this to his son after a particularly grueling day. He admits his shortcomings but lets us know that through God’s grace we can always start new. Facts are, we will fail many times as parents and that is okay, we don’t have to feel guilty because we have that grace.

parenting

The chapters are the 14 Gospel Principals as they apply to parenting; Calling, Grace, Law, Inability, Identity, Process, Lost, Authority, Foolishness, Character, False Gods, Control, Rest and Mercy. The author’s favorite passage in the Bible about parenting is one you might not expect. It is one of the final commandments Jesus made to his disciples.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and          make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,                teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you always, to the end of the                age.” (Matt. 28:18-20)

There is so much in this book that is just profound and really hit home for me. You can read an excerpt HERE or listen to an audio click HERE. I hope you check it out and let me know what you think. You can also enter to win a copy below in our giveaway.

The Easy Way Showcase Your Special Moments

poster

My entire life, I’ve loved doing arts and crafts projects, especially collages. After vacations and other big events, I enjoy compiling photos to make a collage full of memories.  I mean, what better way to cherish the moments than have them frozen in time in a personal collage? So naturally, after a summer full of traveling, I knew a collage would be happening in the near future.

postermywall6

I started going through the hundreds of photos I took this summer and selecting the ones I thought should go in the collage. Around that time, I heard about PosterMyWall from a colleague who thought I would love it.

postermywall7

I heard all about the amazing templates, including a category for family collages that are on their site!  Suddenly, my project seemed so simple. I still had to finish sorting through my online albums, it took me a bit to decide which images to select. The actual uploading of the images and customizing my design only took a few minutes!!! With the site’s online tools (we’re talking backgrounds, images, filters, etc.), I designed and purchased a 24×36″ poster collage.

postermywall5

The collage arrived fairly quickly, and everyone loved it. My family loved talking about our summer adventures when we opened up the package! Now we use PosterMyWall to create similar gifts for friends and family. If you want to see what other products PosterMyWall offers, check out this page.

postermywall4

Update: I have to say when I was ordering, it kept telling me that I did not have enough photos, but I had so many photos selected. I kept adding more until I did not receive the warning. When I got my poster, the thumbnails were so small and so many of them made it so busy. I really was not happy that all the photos were so small. I would not pay attention to that if I ordered again. I would add much less so that you can see the photos.

A Parent’s Guide to Childhood Asthma

Asthma is recognized as one of the leading chronic disorders in childhood, affecting almost 7 million kids in the United States alone. Despite this, a lot of parents remain uneducated or misinformed about what exactly makes it a serious condition. And for parents of kids with asthma, proper education on the disease is imperative to avoid situations that may require emergency care or cause life-threatening complications.

Asthma is incurable, but there are a lot of ways to manage it. Find out what you need to know about asthma and how to prevent its attacks with this step by step guide created by FilterBuy.com.

Asthma is more common in the United States than you might think

asthma-infographic-1

Around 1 to 2 in every 10 kids (approximately 14%) have been told that they have asthma. The thing is, with this condition being incurable, the children who are part of the 14% will grow up and add to the already growing number of teens and adults living with asthma. It is more common than one might think.

Health concerns with asthma

asthma-infogrphic-5

Every year, around 10.5 million school days are missed because of asthma and its complications. In 2010 alone, the number of emergency room cases by children complaining of asthma-related problems added up to a staggering 640,000 visits. These are certainly legitimate health concerns, especially when you factor in that over 150 kids die every year from asthma.

5 Steps to Act Against Your Child’s Asthma

Step 1: Increase your asthma awareness

asthma-graphic-1

Asthma causes the airways to become narrow and then start to swell, causing inflammation. Additionally, this causes extra mucus to be produced. The inflammation of the airways plus the excessive mucus causes difficulty in breathing, which makes the asthmatic person start to wheeze, cough, and experience shortness of breath.

asthma-infogrphic-2

Males are generally more at risk for being affected by asthma. Genetics also play a huge role in determining the risk factor for this condition, as does the existence of allergies, and respiratory infections. Being constantly exposed to a polluted environment can also increase the risk for asthma.

Step 2: Know the triggers and how to avoid them

asthma-infographic-3

Cigarette smoke and pollution can magnify the symptoms of asthma, as will allergens such as pollen and dust. The dander of pets can also trigger symptoms, and this is why a lot of people with asthma opt not to bring in pets into their homes. Having an upper respiratory infection can also cause asthma symptoms.

asthma-infographic-4

Excessive physical activity can exacerbate the symptoms of asthma, so exercise should be done under the doctor’s recommendation. Symptoms are more common in cold weather, and excessive emotional outburst like crying or yelling can trigger them even more.

Step 3: Manage asthma symptoms
Take your child to the doctor as soon as asthma symptoms are noticed. Early treatment can avoid trips to the emergency room and missed workdays for parents.

What Asthma Medications Do Doctors Prescribe?

Quick Relief

asthma-graphic-2

At times called “rescue” medication, quick relief meds are given to provide fast relief from asthma symptoms. The relief is short-term, though, but they work in a similar way as first-aid medications. They mostly come in inhaler form.

Long-term Control

asthma-graphic-3

The goal of long-term control is to prevent symptoms from coming up, as well as to avoid asthma attacks which can be deadly. This typically involves the intake of daily medication through oral, inhaled, or intravenous methods.

asthma-graphic-4

When to call 911?
Asthma causes the airways to get inflamed, which makes breathing difficult. When the child afflicted with asthma starts gasping for air, or has trouble speaking, it’s time to call 911.

Step 4: Prevent Asthma Attacks

Prevention is always far better than cure, and in asthma, there are ways to prevent attacks from occurring. The focus should be on eliminated the triggers that could cause asthma symptoms to show, and this includes minimizing dust, reducing pet dander, avoiding pollen and mold growth, eliminating smoking, and ensuring that the child stays healthy. Changing air filters regularly is one way to avoid these dangers. Parents should also coordinate with the teachers at school about the child’s condition so they can take necessary measures in keeping the environment at school safe for children with asthma.

Step 5: Help your child stay healthy

asthma-graphic-5

Asthma can be deadly when not properly controlled, but it can certainly be managed. Preparing an Asthma Action Plan on top of the careful monitoring of the child’s asthma symptoms can help a lot in disease management. By keeping the child healthy and fit, asthma complications and attacks can be prevented.
