How To Keep Your Pet’s Body & Mind In Top Shape

If you’re an animal lover like me, you want to do all you can to keep your pet healthy and happy.  Healthy skin, coat, eyes, coat, immune system and brain are the keys to your pet living a long, vibrant life.  Did you know fish oil is one of the most important supplements to help keep your pets body and mind in top shape.

The omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil provide widespread benefits. It helps support healthy skin, coat, joints, heart, kidney and the development and maintenance of the brain, eyes and immune system. It also helps promote weight loss in overweight pets and may help reduce certain allergies. You have to be careful of the kind of fish oil you choose because they are not all the same.  The source, purity and concentration make a huge difference in the quality of the fish oil.

Omega 3 Fish Oil For Pets Icy Water

TerraMax Pro’s Premium Omega 3 Fish Oil is the highest quality fish oil you’ll find anywhere. Carefully crafted from deep-sea, cold water fish and molecularly distilled for purity from all toxins, it’s refined for maximum potency without the overwhelming scent of other fish oils.

Some of the benefits of using TerraMax Pro Premium Omega 3 Fish Oil Are:

* EPA, one of the two omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil, acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can help with any condition that causes inflammation of the heart, kidneys, skin, and joints.

* DHA, the other omega 3 fatty acid in fish oil, is important in brain and eye development in puppies and kittens and is recommended for pregnant or nursing pets.

* It can help ease inflammation due to allergies, and reduce dry, itchy skin. This can be an effective way to potentially decrease the incidence of hot spots.

* It promotes a shiny, healthy coat, and may reduce shedding (For cats, this may mean fewer hairballs, since they won’t pick up as many loose hairs while grooming).

Omega 3 Fish Oil For Dogs

Only the finest fish oil is used for TerraMax Pro’s Premium Omega 3 Fish oil: Wild Sardines, Herring, Anchovy and Mackerel. Wild caught exclusively from the clean, icy-cold waters of Iceland, using only sustainable and environmentally responsible fishing methods safe for Dolphins and other protected species.

Are You Having Trouble Achieving & Maintaining Balance In Your Life?

I’m really excited to let you know about The Balance Project!  Did you know that research has shown that 98% of Americans believe that reaching and maintaining a balance in their lives is important but only 14% say they always feel balanced.  That’s a huge gap!  Balance Bar Company wants to help fill that gap and so the makers of Balance Bar, a uniquely balanced energy nutrition bar, launched The Balance Project.  The Balance Project is a multi-year, multi-platform program that is designed to open a dialogue that will help improve America’s level of balance.

Do What Matters

The Balance Project is an online hub to share ideas, day-to-day victories and challenges while having fun and joining others on a journey to sustain balance.  Did you know that research shows the most common ways Americans try to achieve balance is by keeping their finances in order and through activities that improve overall health like getting more/enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising regularly.

Despite this, 2 in 5 Americans believe it’s difficult to find balance. Gabrielle Reece is the exclusive guide of The Balance Project.  Gabrielle, a worldwide fitness and wellness role mode, entrepreneur, wife and mom of three, will provide tips, advice and personal insights for addressing and achieving balance in these areas. Visit project.balance.com for Gabby Reece’s tips & videos on staying balanced.

Gabby
“One the biggest reasons I see people fail at achieving their health and wellness goals is because they don’t go into a program with a balanced approach,” explains Reece. “I’m thrilled to share my perspective on balancing busy lives, families and work with healthy diet and exercise habits that anyone can incorporate into their lives.”

Balancing Act
Balance is a very fluid goal, as our levels of balance are always fluctuating, even day-to-day and season-to-season. For example, Americans report being the most balanced on Saturdays, and the least balanced on Mondays. They also indicate that they are most balanced during the summer months, and least balanced during the winter months, when 61% of Americans report feeling unbalanced.

Gender Wars
According to the survey, 70% of male respondents indicate that they are more likely to feel balanced, while only 63% of women indicate the same. What are men doing differently? Staying calm. When looking for balance, ladies should take the idea of “don’t sweat the small stuff” to heart. In nearly every area tested, women are more likely than men to admit something has a significant impact on throwing them off-balance, including finances, sleep, health, and family.

Maternal Instinct
A mother’s work is never done, but at least she knows where to focus her attention to find balance. Nearly every single mom agrees that health (99%) and family and personal relationships (99%) are important to achieving balance in life. How can the busy mom get to a Zen state of balance? For starters, get outside. Enjoying nature (67%) and taking vacations (66%) are the top actions that have a significant impact on achieving balance for moms. Spending time with a significant other (63%) was revealed as the next most impactful way for moms to try to achieve balance.

How To Keep Your Family Hydrated In Sickness & Health #DrinkDripDrop

I know it’s almost spring on the calendar but most of the country is just starting to feel temps warm up. We experienced one of the coldest and snow filled winters on record! Our weather in New York this winter was horrendous and the bone chilling cold was brutal.  Cold and flu season was the worst this year.  Everyone I talked to said they had never been so sick.  I had a fever of 103 for over 3 days and I don’t remember the last time I was that sick.  If there is one piece of advice we all probably know about colds and flu, it has to be to stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids.

When you’re sick your body needs the right kind of fluids to replenish lost electrolytes.  DripDrop is a hydration powder that was developed by a Mayo Clinic-trained physician.  DripDrop activates the sodium-glucose co-transport system, one of the fastest hydration mechanisms in the body. It literally pulls water from your gut and hydrates you faster.

DripDrop

You simply mix the great tasting powder with water and drink.  Clinical studies show that drinking DripDrop rehydrated the body 34% faster than water alone and 20% faster than sports drinks or pediatric solutions.  DripDrop is a great choice for rehydrating when battling gastrointestinal illnesses.  I know those are running rampant right now.  I have even heard that some schools had to close because so many students and staff were affected.

DripDrop 2

DripDrop is an excellent choice to use for children.  Children, especially small children can become dehydrated very quickly when sick.  When my son was 12 months old, in less than 24 hours with an intestinal bug he became so dehydrated the pediatrician admitted him to the hospital.  Many young children are admitted for the same reason.  Fevers especially can dehydrate children fast! DripDrop can help to keep your child hydrated when they’re sick or playing sports.

The best part is DripDrop is available in two yummy flavors, lemon and berry.  As parents we know, if our kids won’t drink something, it doesn’t matter how healthy it is!  We tried DripDrop recently and it was super easy to mix, it mixed up well right in a water bottle. In our family taste tests, the flavors received a big thumbs up all around!  You can purchase DripDrop at your neighborhood CVS, Walgreens or HEB stores. You can follow DripDrop on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.  Stay well, stay active and stay hydrated.

First Baby Born After Womb Transplant Inspiration For Women With Uterine Infertility

September 2014 in Sweden, a baby boy was born, everyday occurrence I know, but not so with this birth.  Vincent was born to a mother who was unable to carry a child because of uterine infertility.  Uterine infertility describes when a woman is born without a uterus or had her uterus removed. In the past women who experienced this were told there was no way they could carry and give birth to their own child.  That is no longer true.  Vincent’s mother was the recipient of a womb transplant and is thrilled with her miracle baby and the fact she was able to experience being pregnant with her own child.  There have been 2 babies born since Vincent that were the result of the same procedure.

The surgeon and pioneer of womb transplants is Dr. Mats Brannstrom in Sweden. Dr. Brannstrom says that there are other womb transplant patients pregnant now and they expect the birth of more babies in the upcoming months. Brannstrom was inspired back in 1998 in Australia after removing the uterus of a young woman with cancer. He remembers having to tell her that while she would be cancer free, she would not be able to carry a pregnancy.  The woman asked about the possibility of transplanting her mother’s uterus into herself.

Dr. Mats Brannstrom

Dr. Mats Brannstrom

The idea set Brannstrom off to begin a research project in Sweden. After successful transplants and subsequent pregnancies in animals, Brannstrom felt the chance for success in humans was good.  In 2012 the first 2 transplants were performed on two women, one born without a uterus and the other who had to have her uterus removed due to cervical cancer. In these first 2 transplants the uterus was donated by the patient’s mother. Following  the transplant women must wait a period of  at least 12 months before in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be performed.

The mother of the first baby born after a uterus transplant did so with a 61-year-old womb donated by a family friend. The 36-year-old was one of  9 women who underwent the transplant led by Dr. Brannstrom.  The family friend is the mother to 2 children.  12 months after surgery, the patient underwent IVF using her egg and her partners sperm, 9 months later a healthy baby boy named Vincent (below) was born.

One may question how a 61-year-old uterus could support a healthy pregnancy, but as an obstetrician on the uterus transplant team explained, there is evidence that a 70-year-old uterus will function like a 20-year-old uterus. It’s not the age of the uterus but the eggs that matter.

Vincent’s mother, who does not wish to be identified, was admitted to the hospital for preeclampsia at 31 weeks. Vincent was delivered by C-section less than 24 hours later.  Even though he was early, he was healthy and is doing well.  The parents understand that Vincent’s birth has been an inspiration to many other women who have uterine infertility.

So what do you think?

6 Ways To Save Monarch Butterflies With The #NWF

Living in the lush mountains of upstate New York, we are blessed to be surrounded by acres upon acres of lush meadows and fields.  My kids have always been around nature.  In fact, I still remember when my daughter was entering 3rd grade, we were to look at the milkweed plants to try to find a Monarch Caterpillar.  We did and we sent it in to her class.  Every year the third grade does this and they raise the caterpillars and set the gorgeous Monarchs free.

We are in a crisis though, since 1990 the Monarch populations has decreased by 90%.  I have noticed how rare it is to see a Monarch but was surprised to learn we lost such a large percentage.  The more I thought, I could not recall seeing  even see one last year.   The beautiful yellow Swallowtail butterflies are prevalent and feed on the many succulent perennials in my garden.  I have to do my part this year to try to bring the Monarch population back!

You may be wondering what we can do. It’s as easy as planting Milkweed.  Milkweed serves as a food source, nursery and home for the Monarchs.  The National Wildlife Federation says there is hope for the Monarch if we act now. Below you find 6 ways to save Monarchs with the  NWF.  This information and more is on their website so click the links below to learn more.

NWF-Save-Monarchs graphic

Six Ways to Save Monarchs with NWF

  1. Help Save Grasslands – America’s native grasslands are critically important for monarchs. They offer both milkweed for monarch caterpillars as well as nectar plants for adult butterflies (and many other pollinators too). Today, more than 90 percent of native grasslands have been converted to cropland and development. Grasslands are disappearing faster than any other ecosystem in North America, and that’s a big problem for monarchs.  Join NWF in fighting to save grasslands for monarchs.
  2. Support Highway Habitat Corridor – NWF and USFWS are working to create a coalition of agriculture leaders and highway transportation organizations to plant milkweed and nectar plants along monarch migratory flyways and in other important monarch breeding grounds along key Midwest and Texas corridors.  Learn more about highway habitat corridor plan and how to support it.
  3. Plant Milkweed – You can make saving the monarch personal by planting milkweed in your yard or garden. There are many milkweed species found in North America, so no matter where you live, there’s at least one species native to your area. You’ll be rewarded not only with he knowledge that you are making a difference, but by attracting monarchs to enjoy. Find out what milkweeds are from your region.
  4. Don’t Use Pesticides – Monarchs are insects, and so spraying insecticides will kill them. Make the commitment to avoid spraying pesticides in your yard. Find out how to garden organically.
  5. Create Monarch Habitat– NWF’s Garden for Wildlife program can teach you how to turn any outdoor space into a complete habitat for monarch. Just provide food, water, cover and places to raise young.  It all starts with what you plant and you can create a habitat garden in your own yard, at your office, your church or the local school grounds. Entire communities are launching efforts to create monarch habitat. Learn how to create a wildlife-friendly garden.
  6. Join NWF Affiliate Efforts in Your State — Eleven of NWF’s state affiliates are active partners in the Garden for Wildlife program, teaching people how to create habitat for monarchs and other wildlife. They offer regional expertise and resources, offering native milkweed seeds, running monarch tagging and citizen science efforts and even working on legislative solutions. Joining these efforts is a great way to get involved on the local level. Find out if your state’s NWF affiliate is working to protect monarchs.

Milkweed Seed Finder Graphic

I hope you will join me in doing our part to create a natural habitat for the Monarchs.  Please let me know if you plan to participate.  I am really looking forward to seeing more and more of these beautiful creatures.  I know we will if we all do our part.  So, are you in?

Measles Cases Rising And Junk Science Is To Blame?

vaccine 1

So unless you’ve been under a rock, you’re well aware of the measles outbreak that started in Disneyland and has now spread to 121 cases across the U.S.  Doctors, the American Academy of Pediatrics, CDC, and more are urging parents to get their children vaccinated.

This has created a storm of opposition from the anti-vax parents.  Seemingly unconcerned with what they deem a mild or non-serious illness, they are defending their rights not to vaccinate.  They feel they are protecting their children from autism which they believe is caused by the MMR vaccine.  The study that perpetuated the myth was retracted and deemed junk science. Regardless, they remain steadfast in their decision not to vaccinate despite increased concern of a measles epidemic.

mickey_mouse_measles

I thought I would research the answers to questions that people have been asking regarding all this debate.   So let’s look at what perpetuated the notion that the MMR vaccine was causing Autism?

We need to go back to 1988, when a doctor in the UK by the name of Andrew Wakefield published a study with just 12 child subjects. The children were brought to his clinic suffering from diarrhea and/or abdominal pain.  These children were said to have a history of normal development but subsequently lost certain skills.  When Wakefield was gathering their medical history, he asked the parents when their child received the MMR vaccine and how that correlated to their loss of skills. Based upon this data, Wakefield believed there was a connection between the vaccine and autism.

However, there was no objective scientific data to back his theory up, it was based on the recall of the parents. Given that some of the vaccines were administered as much as 9 years prior, there is reasonable concern about the accuracy.   What is even more troubling, is that Wakefield, claimed that the bowel dysfunction was caused by the MMR vaccine which then caused the autism, even though 4 of the 12 children in the study experienced behavioral disorders prior to the bowel issues.  This fact alone refutes Wakefield’s theory.

There was also no control group, a critical omission casting more doubt on his findings.  A good standard of science, is that the findings can be replicated in a separate setting.  After sharing specimens with colleagues at the Royal Free Hospital in London, Wakefield’s findings could not be replicated.  His study was later retracted from the Lancet where it was originally published.

retracted-lancet-218x300

The doctor’s troubles did not end there, a paper in the Journal of Molecular Pathology written by Wakefield in 2002, was found to be critically flawed.  A recent study in the British Medical Journal found no rise in incidence of autism in children who received MMR as compared to those who did not. The authors also showed that in autistic children (both ASD and classical) the age at which a child received MMR did not affect the age at which the diagnosis of autism was made.

So why then do some parents so vehemently claim that the MMR vaccine caused their child’s Autism?  Autism is most often first identified in toddlers aged 18-30 months.  Since the MMR vaccine is administered just before this peak age, it causes some parents to link the two together.  There is no medical evidence to support this.  Extensive reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conclude that there is no proven association between MMR vaccine and autism. Dr. Wakefield has since lost his license to practice medicine.

So what does all this mean to the anti-vaxers? Are they changing their stance?  No, they are not and they are just as steadfast in their decision not to vaccinate.  Many claim that the diseases that the vaccines have eradicated are not that serious. Really?  This assumption is based on what?  Their opinion?  The AAP does not take the stance that the diseases are harmless.  In fact they warn parents of the risks and urge them to vaccinate their children.  Some pediatricians are refusing to treat the children of parents who refuse to vaccinate.  They do not want their patients to be exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases in the waiting rooms.  There are also many calling for a ruling that unvaccinated children not be allowed to attend public school.

I wonder what these parents are going to think in 15 or so years from now when their daughters and sons are dating and moving toward marriage.  Have they thought that their sons could contract mumps and be sterile?  Or that their grandchild may suffer debilitating birth defects or be stillborn because their mother contracted measles during pregnancy?  Have they thought that far ahead, or do they plan to rush out and try to get their child exposed to these illnesses so they have natural immunity?

Will their pregnant daughters live in constant fear of contracting Rubella?  Will they suffer the grief of losing their baby or caring for a child with severe birth defects stemming from a medical decision based on flawed science?  Will their daughters rush out and get immunized to protect themselves after seeing the results of primary Rubella infection in unvaccinated pregnant friends and family members? Who knows what they future will hold for them.  It’s scary to think about.

While many are still touting unfounded fears linking vaccines to autism, Autism Speaks chief science officer Rob Ring, has released a statement saying vaccinations cannot cause the disorder — and telling parents to vaccinate their children.

So why do they say the measles is a harmless childhood illness?  The majority in the anti-vax movement were born after the vaccine, so they have no first-hand experience.  Prior to the vaccine, measles killed 500 people a year in the U.S.  Measles infection caused 48,000 people a year to be hospitalized and 4,000 experienced encephalitis, a dangerous condition that causes the brain to swell and caused 400-500 deaths.

Measles is one of the most infectious diseases because it’s airborne and lingers in the air causing it to spread quickly.  People can spread the disease for four days before they develop any symptoms. Highly contagious, 90% of people not immune will contract the virus if exposed.

So how do you feel on the issue?  Let me know, but please keep your comments respectful.

go vaccinate your children
