Stop Posting “FML” Statuses!!!

It's just a bad day not a bad lifeNothing gets under my skin more than “FML” statuses that people post.  In fact I hate them so much, that as I go through my Facebook Feed and just quickly read them, I have to stop and say a prayer that lets God know I was just reading that and didn’t say that myself about my life.

I know to most of you that probably sounds crazy or silly, but it’s the truth.  The biggest reason I despise it is that it’s often said about very trivial things.  You know like asking for no mayo on your burger and getting one with mayo.  Sometimes it could be something more, say your car skidding on ice even though you did not hit anyone else or receive any injuries. That should not have a “FML” status but a “Thank God” or “Life is Good” status.

There are so many people struggling just to live, those with life-threatening illnesses, who are in pain and still fighting with every ounce of strength left to make it another day.  They are not posting “FML” statuses, they know how precious” life is and they are thankful for every minute.  To post a status that you missed the bus or were late to work with “FML” is just crapping on your life. Maybe it was destiny that you missed that bus, perhaps getting on that bus would have led to something very bad for you.  I believe every thing happens for a reason so if you didn’t catch the bus, try to look at it in a different way. Value your life no matter how hard it may seem at times. Never think it’s not worth it, because you need to remember there are people all over, who would trade places with you in a heartbeat.  Parents who have to stand by helplessly while their child takes their last breath, moms who have to say goodbye to their families way before their time, dads who will never get to show their son how to shave.

Life is precious, life is fragile, life is fleeting, please don’t put such little value on yours.  Cherish your life instead.  I am not saying you can’t post about having a bad day or something bad happening.  Of course you can share that and get some encouragement and hugs from friends.  It’s just the “FML” that you need to lose.  In the words of Max Ehrmann, “With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”

Peeler 1

The handle allows you to peel in a vertical style.  Easy care, just pop the peeler in the dishwasher.  The peeler’s vertical blade is made from advanced ceramic and it is super sharp and stays that way 10 times longer than steel blades. It is so easy to peel vegetables because the optimal cutting angle just glides right through foods effortlessly.  The blade will not rust or corrode ever! The ceramic blade also will not brown foods or transfer a metallic taste or smell.

Peeler 2

My husband tried this peeler out and loves it.  So easy to peel any type of fruit or vegetable and the ceramic blade is so much cleaner and more sanitary than metal.  The sharp red color makes it easy to locate the peeler in a drawer.  If you are in the market for a new peeler, do yourself a favor and check out the Vertical, Double Edge Peeler from Kyocera Advanced Ceramics.

Baking Up #BigGameTreats With SNICKERS® & Skittles®!!!

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.#BigGameTreats #CollectiveBias

SNICKERS-#GameDayTreats-#CollectiveBias-#Shop

The older I get, the more I can’t stand winter and in New York we are experiencing extreme, frigid temperatures.  The kind of dangerously low, temperatures causing our schools to close for!  We went into NYC this past Saturday and after going to the circus, I so badly wanted to walk with my husband and little ones on the streets of Manhattan, pick up some Italian pastries and show them the sites of the city that never sleeps.

However, literally a couple of blocks and we felt like we had frostbite so we ducked into a restaurant, had a late dinner and hailed a taxi to go back home.  Very disappointing.  It’s times like now I love when I see stores putting up spring displays and anything that makes January and the winter go faster.  Which is why when I went to Walmart to pick up some candy I needed for baking, I soaked in the spring merchandise on the shelves.

I am focusing on the next big event, we will be entertaining friends and family for the “Big Game” in a few weeks.  I love to bake and so I tried out some recipes this past weekend.  Who doesn’t love chocolate, caramel and peanuts?  Not any one I know, so I was excited to mix it up in the kitchen with SNICKERS®.  I first made some decadent, SNICKERS® Cupcakes.

Snickers 27

Don’t they look fabulous? See the ooey, gooey filling!  SNICKERS® Minis  on top is so much better than a cherry.

Snickers 28

Would you like to make these?  I knew you would.  First thing is to bake up some chocolate cupcakes.  I used just a boxed Devil’s Food cake mix and prepared and baked according to the package directions.

Snickers 17

When the cupcakes are cool you make the filling by mixing milk, butter, soft caramels, chopped peanuts and marshmallow fluff.  You add milk, butter and caramels to a saucepan and melt on the stovetop over medium heat until melted stirring constantly.

Snickers 18

Snickers 19

Then add peanuts and marshmallow fluff to the melted confection and stir until everything is combined well.  Remove the mixture from the heat and allow to cool and thicken for approximately 30-35 minutes.

Snickers 20

Snickers 21

When you are ready to fill the cooled cupcakes, you cut out a hole in the middle of the top of the cupcake where the filling with go.  Then you can fill with a pastry bag and decorator tip all the cupcakes with the filling.

Snickers 23

Snickers 25

Snickers 24

For the cupcake frosting I made a peanut Butter Buttercream by mixing butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, peanut butter and milk.  Put the frosting in a pastry bag and top all the cupcakes with the frosting.

Snickers 22

Snickers 26

Last I make a chocolate glaze by mixing confectioner’s sugar, cocoa powder and milk and drizzle the glaze over the cupcakes.  Top each cupcake with a half of a SNICKERS® Minis. Yum, these made the final cut and it was a unanimous decision that they will be found on our game day buffet.   If you want to try the list of ingredients is below.

#BigGameTreats-#CollectiveBias-#Snickers-#Skittles

Chocolate Cake Mix of Your Choice ( Prepare and Bake Cupcakes According To Package Directions)

 Cupcake Filling:

  • 3 Tbsp of Milk
  • 6 Tbsp of Butter
  • 8 Oz. Caramels
  • 1/4 Cup Marshmallow Fluff
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped Peanuts

Peanut Butter Icing

  • 1 Cup Butter
  • 4 Cups Confectioner’s Sugar
  • 1 Tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 2/3 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 2-3 Tbsp Milk
Chocolate Glaze and Topping
  • 1/2 + 1/8 Cup Confectioner’s Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. Cocoa
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp of Milk
  • 18 SNICKERS® Minis

Snickers 33

SNICKERS® Stuffed Peanut Butter Cookies were the next treat on my baking agenda.  These are an easy peanut butter cookie that is stuffed with a SNICKERS® Mini.

snickers 4

Snickers 16

First step is to make your cookie dough so cream butter, peanut butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar with your electric mixer.  Add egg, vanilla, milk, salt and baking soda and mix until completely combined.  Slowly add your flour a little at a time and mix until the dough comes together.  Chill your dough for at least 30 minutes.

Take your chilled dough and scoop out two tbsp. size  balls of dough, flatten slightly with the palm of your hand  and place a SNICKERS® Mini in the center of one of the flattened dough balls.

Snickers 5

Snickers 6

Snickers 7

Top with the other slightly fattened dough balls and seal the edges and form into a ball.   Continue this process placing the cookies on a cookie sheet approximately 2″ apart.

Snickers 8

Bake at  350 degrees F for 13-16 minutes or until they just begin to brown.

Snickers 9

Snickers 12

Cool 5 minutes on the cookie sheet and then remove them to a wire rack to cool completely.  Store the cookies in an airtight container or freeze them between layers of paper towels for up to 1 month.

Snickers 14

Snickers 15

So what did my family think?  Was this cookie a game day winner?  You betcha and it will have its special place on our big game day buffet extravaganza!  Want to try them?  The recipe is below.

SNICKERS® Stuffed Peanut Butter Cookies

  • 1/2 Cup (1 Stick) Salted Butter
  • 3/4 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 3/4 Cup Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 Tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Tbsp Milk
  • 1/2 Tsp Baking Soda
  • 1-1/2 Cups Flour
  • SNICKERS® Minis (about 20-24)

Okay one more but we are going to appeal to those who are looking for something less chocolatey and more tangy.  For those guests I  tried a Skittles®  Drop Sugar Cookie.  Big thick, soft and chewy sugar cookies with a colorful mix of Skittles® are easy to make and oh so good.  The cookie even has a lemony, citrus flavor from the candy.  It was quite remarkable when I tasted that because I was surprised they would flavor the cookie itself but it was a delicious surprise.

snickers 32

Snickers 11

I first made a drop sugar cookie batter.  Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy then beat in one egg plus one egg yolk.  Add vanilla and mix well.  Then incorporate the flour, baking soda and cornstarch (first combine the dry ingredients ) and mix until well blended.

I used a cookie scoop to scoop out the dough onto a cookie sheet and then pressed in the Skittles® candies on top.  If you had a favorite team that was yellow and red, purple and yellow etc, you could use just those 2 colors to show your support for your team!

snickers 1

Snickers 2

Snickers 3

Bake the cookies at 350 degrees for about 12-14 minutes or until edges look set and just beginning to brown.  Remove and let cool on cookie sheet for a few minutes and then remove them to cool completely on a cooling rack.  This recipe makes about 24 large cookies.  See full list of recipe ingredients below.

  • 2 Tsp Cornstarch
  • 1/2 Cup (1 Stick) Salted Butter

How To Survive Winter Travel With Kids & Safety 1st, Advance SE 65 Air + Convertible Car Seat Giveaway!!!

safety1st_logo_trans

The holidays may be over but Winter travel is in full swing.  As the temps get colder many families decide to motor south for some fun in the sun and escape the winter chill.  Schools seem to know this too and many have a winter break carved out for families to do just this.

I thought this post from Safety 1st Consumer Safety Experts on “How to Survive The Holiday With Kids?” would be applicable for any kind of family getaway this winter season.  After reading, be sure and enter the giveaway to win a Safety 1st, Advance SE 65 Air + Convertible Car Seat!

safety 1st-St. Germain Car SEat- Winter Travel

According to AAA last year 94.5 million people were on the roads, train tracks or in the skies during the holiday season.  That’s a lot of people! Then add your own kids into the mix of congestion and for some it can mean holiday headaches.  However, Safety 1st has some tips to help fight some of those headaches this season.

1.      Avoid peak travel days –Try not to fly or drive the days immediately before and after the actual holiday.  Those are the busiest travel days. However, if you fly or take a train you might save money by traveling on the actual holiday, the roads are less congested too.

2.      Prepare your child for the trip – Holiday parties can be overwhelming with sensory overload.  Especially for young children it’s good to talk about the upcoming trip days even weeks in advance.  This will help him or her get excited about the journey.  Show photos of family members or friends your child has not met yet, this way the new face might be a little familiar on arrival.

3.       “Are we there yet?” – To help avoid that dreaded phrase an hour into your six-hour trip reserve a bag just for the kids, include books, toys, diapers a change of clothes and snacks.  Pre-load a tablet or smartphone with kid friendly apps or games. If you are driving keep all necessary items such as wipes, hand sanitizer or tissues easy to reach in a second – there are times you may not want to be digging through the bottom of a bag for such items. The Safety 1st Car Door Sanitation Station is a great solution.

4.      Car Seats – If you are flying check to make sure your car seat is FAA certified. If it’s not clearly labeled contact the manufacture. For parents with older children the Safety 1st BoostAPack can double as a kid survival kit, it’s FAA certified, and will fit in the plane overhead bin.

If you are driving make sure your car seat is installed correctly. If it’s been awhile since you visited a car seat check, it’s recommended to check your seat with a Certified Child Safety Technician in advance of your trip. Safercar.gov is a great resource.

5.      Prepare the guest room – If your child will be sleeping in a Play Yard during the trip, use that for bed or nap time the entire week before. This will help him or her get used to a new sleep environment.  Also if your infant or child sleeps better in a dark room or tends to wake up early with the morning light, bring garbage bags or dark fabric to tape over windows.

Lugz, Women’s Shifter Work Boot Review & Giveaway!!!

Lugz-Logo

We have officially entered the winter season. If you are looking for a sharp looking, practical boot that will give you good traction no matter what winter dishes out, I have a recommendation.  I recently browsed Lugz great selection of boots and decided to try the Lugz, Women’s Shifter work boot in black.  Now, as a woman with size 11 feet, I was worried they would be huge and make my feet look tremendous.  I was wrong, in fact they make my feet look smaller.  The boots looked so small I thought they would be too small but they were not and provided lots of room for my feet.

The boots are sturdy and very high quality that will stand up to any amount of hard work or just a day out running errands.  The cushioned insoles keep my feet comfy and the sole provides lots of gripping traction to keep me on my feet and not slip sliding away on snowy or icy terrain.  As long time Lugz lovers, our family knows their shoes and boots stand up to lots of wear and keep looking good.  If you are looking for durable, good-looking footwear for your entire family, check out Lugz!

Right Now if you buy one pair of Lugz, you will get 50% Off another pair when you use the code BOGODEC but hurry this great offer ends December 30th!!! See the site for full details on this amazing offer.

Elf On The Shelf-Worst Parenting Fail!!!

I love the Elf on the Shelf but not for the reason you may think.  I love them because they remind me of my absolute favorite childhood Christmas decoration. My parents had the kneehugger elves from Japan and every year I would arrange them hanging with acrobatic skill through the house.  I remember telling my mom they were my favorite and she told me they were hers too.

Japan-Kneehugger-Elves

When I had my own family she and I were shopping one day and found some very similar elves of which I scooped up more than a few to decorate my home.  So, when the Elf on the Shelf came out, I loved it just on its looks.  I am not one of those over the top parents who cannot wait every night to plan some elaborate hijinks that the kids will find the next day.  Truth be told, my husband and I forget half the time to move them (we have 2) and have to tell the kids things like,”I guess he likes the top of the picture frame so much, he went right back.” or “He is really being tricky, guess he thought you would not look there since he was there yesterday.”

Elves-On-The Shelf

My kids love elves too, in fact I picked up several more this year and my little guys was so cute.  In the store they asked if they could touch them and if they were the real elves.  To which I answered, “No, they are just adorable decorations.  Which ones should we get?”  So I have elves all over and the irony is in my biggest confession which I will tell you next.

Last year, someone I know posted on Facebook that her children were traumatized when going through the Christmas decorations to find the Elf on the Shelf packed away with the ornaments.  He was supposed to be at the North Pole, not in a box that was in their basement all year!  The magic was spoiled and I am not sure if the mom or the children was more upset.  So, last year I told my husband we could not put our Elves away with any of the Christmas decorations.   Instead we hid them really good, in fact we hid them so good, we don’t even know where they are!

I am so mad now, because I either have to buy 2 more and you can’t just buy replacement elves, you have to buy the whole set up and I have the books and boxes because they do not take those with them to the North Pole.  I would still need to come up with a story of why they are so late, but I am good at stories so that is not the part that bothers me.

My husband found my childhood kneehugger  elves and a bunch of others along with an Annalee Santa that looks like an elf and asked why don’t I just spin some yarn with these characters.  I have thought about some very elaborate tales, like telling he kids that one of the older and very wise kneehugger elves just made it here, he is old and his magic is not so great any more.  He brought a note that our elves Jingle and Jangle had a very odd thing happen right before they were leaving to come to our house.  They were decorating the tree and their legs got caught in some of the lights in a way that twisted them and they both broke both legs.  They were in excruciating pain and the doctor could not clear them to travel.  That is when the wise but old elf said he would make the journey to explain.   It took him a long time to get here and he cannot possibly fly back every night, so he will just phone in reports and ride back with Santa on Christmas Eve.

No matter what this goes down in the parenting fail book.  I am sure they will both be found January 1st.

UPDATE

A few hours after writing this Jingle and Jangle were found.  They were tucked inside a santa hat behind some of my dolls that were on a shelf.  Hubby tucked them back there and it was like a Clark Griswold moment when he thought about the switch being off when he remembered.  Now they are perched one in the tree and one hanging from a cabinet door handle for the kids to see in the morning.  Better late than never!
