Why is There Controversy Over The Anatomically Correct Boy Doll?

My Facebook feed has been full of posts about the controversy over an anatomically correct baby boy doll that is being sold at Toys R Us.  I want to know why this is making news when anatomically correct boy dolls have been around for so long.

When I was a kid, I had an anatomically correct baby boy doll made by Mattel.  He was in the Baby Tenderlove line of dolls and was sold as their little brother.  Being the daughter of a mother that loved dolls, I had dolls of all kinds and that included several of the Ideal, Tenderlove dolls.

Now in the mid to late 70’s when this doll was introduced there was also another anatomically correct boy doll by Ideal that was on the market, called Archie Bunker’s Grandson Joey, from the sitcom All In The Family.

Archie-Bunker-Grandson-Joey-Stivic

This little doll was very similar to Ideal’s Tenerderlove little boy.  Funny thing is, when we were buying the Joey doll, we got home to find that Baby Tenderlove had been put in the box instead.  The only reason I knew it was not Joey was the eye color was different.  So I had a Joey box and Tenerderlove doll.  Either way they were very similar and both with their little boy parts.  I still have him around here somewhere.

So back to the original question of why is this an issue now in the year 2014?  Does this cause anyone real issues?  Recently I heard 2 colleagues  who are in their early 30’s say they were not allowed to have a Ken doll growing up.  That’s a foreign concept to me and all the little girls I played with growing up had Ken to go with their Barbie and be a husband and a dad.  I would think those parents would want their girls to have the traditional family dynamic.

I truly cannot comprehend what must have been their train of thought.  Do they think somehow a Ken doll will corrupt their daughter and how exactly would that happen? Like I said, I liked having the family dynamic of a mom and dad Barbie family and it did not cause issues of any kind.  Ken-Barbie-Mattel

I think not being allowed to have the doll raises more issues and does more harm.  It also instills that men are bad or will have the child then focused on what’s the reason her parents will not allow Ken in the house.  So in the long run, trying to protect their child from whatever it is they are trying to protect them from is instead focusing the child’s attention on it.

As I am writing this, I just remembered the 70’s Sunshine Dolls also from Mattel.  I had these dolls too and they were sold as a family unit with a mother, father and baby or baby and toddler.  I think this is a healthy concept for kids and you could even buy additional kids, babies and grandparents as well as a craft store business and family home.

Sunshine Family

In closing I think a much more controversial doll is the Breast Milk Baby doll by Berjun. In my opinion, it’s a very weird concept that little girls should put on a top that gives them breasts so they can breastfeed their doll.  I understand it’s natural, but natural for a woman not a little girl.  The whole idea of it is unsettling to me.  However, an anatomically correct boy doll; that’s so last century!

Finn + Emma® Made For Organically Grown Babies!!! Exclusive 20% Off Discount Code In Post!!!

Finn and Emma Logo

Do you have a little one?  Maybe you have a new grandchild or just searching for a great baby gift.  Whatever the reason, if you are looking for quality, organic, safe clothing and accessories for baby, you will want to check out Finn + Emma®.  Have you heard that 1/3 pound of chemicals including pesticides, chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, ammonia, lead and phthalates go into the production of  a single conventional tee-shirt.  These toxins have a negative impact on the environment, the workers in the fields and factories and of course the little one wearing the shirt.  Considering the skin is the largest organ of the body, these chemicals that are worn directly on the skin are easily absorbed and  that’s really scary!

Finn + Emma® believe in the balance of stylish and sustainable, whimsical and sophisticated, classic and contemporary. With fresh prints, modern colors, and heirloom quality construction, they are creating a new world for the organically grown baby. One where boring designs and toxic chemicals are a thing of the past, and adorable, wearable, remarkable organic cotton is abundant!

Finn-Emma-Gym

All Finn + Emma® products are designed and tested according to applicable rules and regulations. In the U.S., this includes acts enforced by the Consumer Products Safety Commission, and those defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).  As per CPSIA, Finn + Emma® tests post-production samples of all regulated products, using certified third-party laboratories. These products are labeled with tracking information to identify the manufacturing date and location of each product.  This is something that gives parents, grandparents and let’s face it anyone that is concerned about chemicals and toxins peace of mind.

I recently reviewed the Long Bodysuit in the Word design.  The long sleeves of this 100% G.O.T.S. certified organic cotton bodysuit keep little ones warm and protected.  The bodysuit features lead and nickel free snaps with coconut inserts that make it easy to dress squirmy babies and toddlers.  The super soft, organic cotton is so comfy and this versatile bodysuit can be worn alone or pairs so well with pants.  This bodysuit is an essential piece to have in any little one’s wardrobe.   This bodysuit is made using low-impact inks and dyes.

Another Finn + Emma® product I had the chance to review was the adorable Piper the Elephant organic Teething Ring.  Lots of textures for little ones cutting teeth on this teething toy.  The hand knit teething ring features and uncoated hardwood that is finished with a bit of beeswax, no harsh chemicals here!  The ring is soft, smooth and safe to bite to help ease the pain of growing those pearly whites.  Toy is made with 100% G.O.T.S. certified organic cotton and  is eco-friendly using non-toxic dyes and sheep’s wool stuffing.  The toy is fair trade and is hand knit by artisans in Peru.

Lakeshore, Are You Ready? Game Show Review and Giveaway!!!

Lakeshore Logo

It seems the end of the school year is gaining on us.  During the summer it’s important to keep your children engaged in learning, but that can be difficult since they want to have fun instead.  A great way to combine the two, is by playing a new series of play-at-home games designed to prepare children for the next grade of school by Lakeshore.  The games are called Are You Ready? Game Shows  and they are available in grades Kindergarten-5th grade.

Lakeshore Are you ready

Lakeshore Are You Ready 1

Are you ready 1

This new set of innovative learning games provides an easy way for parents to prevent summer learning loss and improve children’s school performance in the coming year. Perfect for summer learning, these games target the most essential math and language skills needed for success in school—while keeping kids engaged as they take on the exciting role of game-show contestant!

I received Are You Ready For 2nd Grade? Game Show for review and played it with my first grader.  He was very motivated when he saw the realistic play money.  I was amazed at how engaged he was and how well he did answering the questions.  You start with the first set and move on to the subsequent sets keeping track of each question with a handy chart that lets you note if the child answered the question correctly.

Are you ready 2

Lakeshore are you ready 3

Lakeshore Are you ready 4

Lakeshore Are you ready for 5

The chart easily lets you see  skills your child has mastered or if they need extra help in a specific area.  When your child answers the question correctly they get the dollar amount of the card as a reward.  My preschooler quickly wanted to play and I am going to get him the Are You Ready for Kindergarten? Game Show to play over the summer.

Lakeshore, 3-Way Tabletop Easel Review & Giveaway To Celebrate National Crafts Month!!!

Lakeshore Logo

March is National Crafts Month and we love crafts all year in our family so we really thing giving them some recognition is so cool.  My children are all very creative and artistic and so you will find tons of craft supplies, markers, colored pencils, paints, chalks, paper and much more in our home.  My little ones really love to draw and so since they are so close in age and want to do everything together. The 3-Way Tabletop Easel from Lakeshore was the perfect choice for a great art center where they can paint, color and create their own masterpieces  together!

Lakeshore Easel

Right out of the box this easel is a cinch to get set up and you only need to do a quick 2 screw attachment on the tray with the alyn wrench included.  One side features a high quality chalk board that erases completely.  It is a real pet peeve of mine when chalk boards are hard to erase or do not erase completely without a great deal of elbow grease.

Lakeshore 3 Way Tabletop Easel

The other side is a dry erase white board and there is a tray underneath that extends out so each side has a place to hold paint, markers, chalk and other supplies.

Lakeshore 3 Way Tabletop Easel Pic 2

Two blue clips are included to hold paper.  This easel has been used daily since I opened it.  I like that it is lightweight and portable yet sturdy.  It is so easy to take it out on the deck on a nice day and let the kids paint or color outside and then just bring it back in when they are finished without having to lug something big around.

Blast Zone, Ultra Croc Inflatable Water Park Review!!! Exclusive Discount Codes!!!

You may remember our review of the Blast Zone Hang Ten we did a few months ago.  We love that inflatable so when we had the chance to review the huge Ultra Croc Inflatable Water Park we were ecstatic.  It arrived quickly and was very easy to unpack and set up.  All we had to do was unroll the inflatable and then hook the blower up, plug the blower in and voila, we were up and ready to attach the water hoses and sprayers.  It was pretty easy for my husband to attach them and they have multiple velcro fasteners to hold the hose and sprayer heads on securely.  We were also able to just leave them attached and deflate and inflate time and again.  We have used in multiple times in the few days we have had it.  I like that the hose tubing is clear so you can see that it is clean and if there was ever an obstruction.

This inflatable has three separate pools, 3 slides, a climbing wall and that all equals a tremendous amount of fun on a hot day.  My three-year old climbs the wall no problem and there are lots of safety handles for him to use.  They have a blast with this inflatable and we have to literally drag them out when the sun starts going down and they start shivering.  Even then they don’t want to get out.  We never hear that they are tired of it or don’t want to go in.  We simply set it up and start the water in the morning and they are in for the majority of the day.

The quality is great, and we are so glad it has so many commercial features because it is going to hold up very well to the tremendous amount of use it is going to receive.  If you are looking for something super fun to keep the kids active and cool this summer, check out the Blast Zone Ultra Croc Inflatable Water Park or any one of their other great inflatables.  A big thank you to Blast Zone for this incredibly generous and fun review!!!

Patch Products, Farkle Frenzy Game Review & Giveaway!!!

I was recently sent the fast paced  Farkle Frenzy game from Patch Products to review.  Farkle Frenzy adds an exciting new dimension to the classic Farkle dice game! Now everyone rolls at the same time to try to score the most points. Press down the funky Bubble Hub to vibrate and bounce the common die, and then let the fun begin! Take a risk and roll to collect scoring dice on the stepped Dice Risers, and race to fill yours first!   For 2 to 4 players and ages 8 and up.   If you are looking for a fast, fun, family game, then you should check out Farkle Frenzy.  Everyone thought the bubble hub with the enclosed dice was a great addition to the Farkle game, as well as allowing everyone to play at the same time.  If you are a Farkle fan and even if you have never played Farkle, I recommend Farkle Frenzy.

One of The Top Creative Toys For Kids of All Ages

Kaleidagraph

I recently had the opportunity to review the Kaleidograph Pattern Design Toy.  The  deceptively simple, die-cut cards of the Kaleidograph™ can be arranged in over 350 million designs. Based upon geometry in nature — the symmetries of crystals and flowers — the Kaleidograph upholds the tradition of the original, Froebel Kindergarten system that is known to have influenced Frank Lloyd WrightBuckminster FullerPiet Mondrian, and design education at the Bauhaus. Richly personal and environmentally friendly, the Kaleidograph is a toy for all ages. It fosters creativity, rewards with surprise, and brings out the designer in everyone. Made in the USA, the Kaleidograph carries on a tradition of fascinating geometric design toys dating back to the early 19th century.

This pattern set is so much fun.  It literally is great for all ages.  If I have it out, whoever walks in must play around with it and it is quite addicting.  It is so fun to see the different patterns everyone creates and how they get to that pattern.  Some are meticulous and calculating and other throw caution to the wind and just have fun.  It is simple yet expansive, ever-changing in its diversity, brilliant and beautiful, and mirrors nature’s own strategies of creation.

Explore symmetry and color combinations. See how small adjustments produce dramatic changes. The deceptively simple Kaleidograph can be arranged into millions of designs by combining and rotating the variety of die-cut cards. Each set also includes a full-color, two-sided insert with 68 example designs to challenge and inspire.

  •  Over 350 million combinations
  •  Full-color double-sided poster of designs included with both the Crystal and Flora sets
  •  Made in USA from sturdy, non-toxic paperboard
  •  About the size of a thick CD case — 4-3/4″ x 4-3/4″ x 3/8″
  •  Package serves as both sleeve for storage and frame for display
  •  For ages 3 to adult — a toy and a design tool

If you are looking for an original, fun and creative gift for the kids this holiday season, then take a look at   Kaleidograph Pattern Design Toy, it will really delight most anyone.  Mommy Ramblings is adding it to our Holiday Gift Guide.

STEP2 Prepare and Share Kitchen Set Review!!!

I was sent a new STEP2 Prepare and Share Kitchen to review.  STEP2 just introduced this kitchen to their line of great kid’s products.  The kitchen was delivered in a large box and when we opened it, it was all neatly packed and included lots of food, dishes and accessories.  It was very easy to put together and took very little time.  One of the favorite features is the stove burner that when fitted with the skillet sizzles, pot boils, coffee pot boils as well.  It also causes lights to illuminate in the cooking vessels.  It requires 2 AA batteries for the electronic sounds but it was a huge hit and one of the features the boys liked best.  It is designed in neutral colors for boys or girls.

It is a very sturdy unit that will hold up to lots of play and is very easy to wipe down.  I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of accessories this kitchen includes.  It includes 5 large spice/herb bottles, salt and pepper shakers, grinding pepper mill, phone, pots, pans, dishes, cups, utensils and a variety of food, fruits and veggies.  Three removable baskets are handy for storage and play prep and cooking.  The large, deep sink has a swivel faucet.  Stainless steel look oven and refrigerator, hanging hooks, pass through window and ledge for serving, storing and prep add realistic touches to this kitchen set.  The clip for the phone holds it securely in place and is easy for the kids to retrieve the phone and return it when finished with the call.  Kitchen is large enough that the two can play together and still have enough space to play and cook.

This kitchen set is available at Toys R Us for $89.99 and I think it is a great value considering all you get with it.  I recommend this kitchen very much.  If I have any critisism I would say that it would be great if two of the burners had the sounds just because you could have two things cooking/boiling, sizzling at once.  However, that would not deter me from buying this kitchen.  There is plenty to do and kids will have a great time cooking up some gourmet meals.

The contents of the box ready to be assembled.

All set up and ready for the kids.

Green Toys™ Flatbed Truck & Race Car Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Recently, I was sent a Green Toys Flatbed Truck & Race Car to review.  For those of you who are not familiar with Green Toys, their toys are made out of recycled milk jugs and are made in the USA.  You can read about the interesting process on their website by clicking here.  Green Toys has a variety of toys and even tableware.

The first thing I can see is that this is a very durable toy, that is made to withstand rough and tumble play.  I explained to my four year old how the truck is made out of the milk jugs we recycle.  That was really cool for him to hear.  My 2 and 4 year old both loved the truck and race car.  The flatbed on the truck can be raised and lowered and the little race car even has a little outlet on it to show it really is a green car.  The toys are made with  no BPA, PVC, phthalates, or external coatings.  This truck and car can be easily rinsed if it gets sandy or dirty as little boys love to play hard with their cars and trucks.  Nothing to get rusty or any sharp edges to hurt little ones.  This is not only a fun toy but it is such a great company to manufacture toys this way for the children that are our future.

Green Toys is so generous to sponsor a give-away on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win their own Green Toys Flatbed Truck & Race Car.  Thank you Green Toys for the review toy and for sponsoring this great give-away!!!
