“The Gruffalo’s Child” Re-Released on DVD #Giveaway

Yesterday, I told you about the re-release of, The Gruffalo and today, I am here to tell you all about the re-release of, The Gruffalo’s Child. This film is based on the beloved children’s picture book by Julia Donaldson. I can’t tell you how much my kids love these films. I have to admit, I do as well. They are so beautifully done that they captivate our attention from beginning to end. In The Gruffalo’s Child, The Gruffalo tells his child about a Big Bad Mouse that he ran into many years before.

The curious little Gruffalo cannot contain her curiosity and sets out to see if this creature really exists. She encounters the same fox, owl and snake from The Gruffalo who each tell her where she can find the Big Bad Mouse. Feeling that she had been tricked and there is no Big Bad Mouse, she finally runs into the little mouse from The Gruffalo. The little mouse is just as clever, and invites The Gruffalo’s Child to meet the Big Bad Mouse using the moonlight to cast a shadow that scares the Gruffalo’s Child and sends her fleeing.

These films show children that brains can prevail over brawn. Check out the trailer HERE!  Helena Bonham Carter narrates as she did in The Gruffalo. Special features include a Behind the Scenes Documentary and Artwork Gallery. You can purchase this film on Amazon. If you would like a chance to win this DVD, enter the giveaway below.

Award-Winning Children’s Book, “The Gruffalo” re-released on DVD #Giveaway

I am excited to share an enchanting film based on the award-winning children’s picture book by Julia Donaldson. The Gruffalo  has just been re-released on DVD and tells the story of a mouse who walks through the woods in search of a nut. Along his route he runs across several other creatures who think he looks like a tasty treat.

This tiny mouse shows that smart thinking can outwit a hungry fox, owl and snake. Mouse invents an imaginary monster with frightening features to scare them away.

He tells them all he is having lunch with this scary creature and that his favorite food is them which sends them running for cover. Mouse is feeling pretty smug thinking about how easy it was to trick them.

That smug mouse was very surprised to happen upon the very creature he made up, the frightening Gruffalo. The Gruffalo wanted to eat the mouse on a slice of bread but that mouse thought quickly and told the Gruffalo everyone in this forest is afraid of him.

The Gruffalo laughed and said he would walk behind the mouse to see just how frightened everyone was. It worked like a charm and sent the snake, owl and fox running. The mouse then told the Gruffalo that his favorite food was Gruffalo Crumble at which the Gruffalo turned and fled. The mouse found his nut and all was well!

This delightful story brought to life is narrated by Helena Bonham Carter shows that one does not have to be big to be mighty and is wonderful to share with your children. You can watch the trailer HERE!

Dry Brushing Health Benefits

The skin is the largest organ in our body, so it makes sense that ramping up your skin care regime can make significant improvements in your health. When you think about skin care, you probably think about facial cleansers, skin creams and lotions. Have you ever heard of dry brushing? If you haven’t, let me tell you more about it.

What is Dry Brushing?

Dry brushing is when you brush your skin in a certain way with a dry brush that looks very much like a long-handled bath brush. People usually dry brush their skin prior to taking a shower.

There are certain brushing patterns to be aware of when dry brushing. Most people begin with their feet and brush toward their chest or heart. Then they do the same starting at their hands and brushing again toward their chest.

I have a dry brush and it feels amazing! It does not just feel great, there are some fabulous health benefits to doing this.

Heath Benefits of Dry Brushing

  • Exfoliate Obviously this is probably the first benefit you will notice when you begin dry brushing. The brush helps to loosen and remove dead skin cells. If you remain diligent, you should notice your skin feeling much softer.
  • Pore Cleansing As the dead skin cells are removed, so are oil, dirt and other residue from your skin’s pores.
  • Lymphatic Support: Your lymphatic system is a crucial part of your immune system. Dry brushing can improve the function of the lymph nodes, vessels and ducts that transport lymph through your body. The brushing has the ability to stimulate this system to increase the flow and help the body rid itself of toxins.
  • Improving Circulation and Blood Flow: As you would imagine, dry brushing will help your blood flow better which improves circulation and can even help you feel energized.

What Kind of Brush Should You Buy?

There are many dry brushes available to choose from. You should select one that has a firm brush made of natural bristles. They usually have a long handle similar to a bath brush so that you have the ability to brush your back as well as the back side of your legs and feet. I got my brush on Amazon but you can find them at many other stores.

Dry Brushing Technique

As I stated above, it is best to dry brush your skin before you shower.

You can research different techniques online but the basic method is to start at your feet and use long, continuous strokes brushing upward to the tops of your legs. You can repeat this action for 5 or 10 times and then do the other leg.

After you have finished your feet and legs, start with your hands and brush the back of your hands and arms and then the palm of your hands and inner arm up toward your chest area. Again you can do this 5 to 10 times on each side.

Next, you can do your back and trunk area. If the brush is too hard for your mid section, you can get a softer brush for that area and the softer brush can be used on your face as well.

Remember when starting to take it easy, perhaps start with 5 times working up to 10 times over a week or so. Do not use so much pressure that the process is painful or makes your skin red or raw. Naturally your skin will be somewhat pink tinged but never red.

So what about you? Have you tried dry brushing? Are you anxious to try?

Here’s How To Get Those Corkscrew Curls #Giveaway

It never fails, if you have curly hair, you usually want straight hair and if you have straight hair, you want it to be curly. I guess that is why hair styling tools are a big business. We are all familiar with hair straighteners and curling irons but have you heard of the Chopstick wand?

The Lee Stafford CHoPstick Styler is a ceramic Curling Wand. It comes with a heat-resistant glove and I would suggest watching some YouTube videos to see how to use it for best results. I can share some very important things you should not do.

Of course, I learned the hard way that no matter what, do not attempt to brush your hair after curling it.  The results will cause you to immediately jump in the shower and wash your hair. Seriously, don’t do it! You will also want to wear the glove on the hand that is wrapping the hair because the want is very hot. Don’t try to do without it.

My first time was a disaster!  I watched some videos and tried again and it was better but it still made my hair look sort of frizzy and strange. I think I will give it another go and try using a product before curling it.

It does heat up to a high temperature very fast and it definitely does curl hair. You can find this CHoPstick STYLER on Amazon. If you would like a chance to win one, just enter the giveaway below. Good Luck!!!

New Kitchen Update -Choosing Our Cabinets, Sinks, Countertop and More!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone’s year is off to a great start. I have some updates on our new kitchen. While the demo and everything in the house is going to take another 8 weeks at least, we are making headway with our kitchen decisions.

I believe, I shared our choice of Wood-Mode Custom Cabinetry for our kitchen. We are going with their Brookhaven line and our door style is Winter Haven Raised.

The first time I went into the kitchen design center and started working with Regina, our kitchen designer, I was sure I was going with Antique White. Yesterday, when my husband and I were there together making final decisions, I changed my color choice. I am going with Vintage Lace.

Wood-Mode’s Vintage Opaque is a distinctive glaze applied over the base color which in our case is Lace and adds a brushed appearance to the surface while highlighting the details of the door style and architectural elements.

It is funny because the first time I was there, I was sure I did not want that look and yet, the second time, I was sold on it. I feel that is why it is so important to meet with your kitchen designer multiple times in the planning stages of your project. So far, we have been to the kitchen showroom 2 times and Regina has been out to our house once to take measurements.

Now, that we are getting closer to putting the order in, she will come out again to make sure everything is correct. It is so nice to work with a kitchen designer who has experience and guides you along through the process. Yesterday, I remember clearly  saying to myself, “Wow, I am so glad she thought of that!”

The other thing is, they can give you great advice that can save you money and headaches. For instance, since my cooktop is mounted against an outside wall, she advised me not to go with a pot filler. I was not sold on one either, you may remember my earlier post.

The reason is, living in upstate New York, there is a danger of the pipes freezing which would cause extensive damage to our kitchen. Dealing with the damage from a leak is something we are familiar with and do not wish to deal with again if we can help it.

I know you can mount them on deck but I don’t want that sticking out of the counter top. Truthfully, the more I read about them, the more I am glad to have that reason for not putting one in. You still need to carry the water back to your sink. We decided to add an island prep sink which is behind the stove area. This will allow us to fill pots even if someone is at the kitchen sink.  I am good with that.

I am really excited about how I was able to utilize a lot of what I considered dead space in my old kitchen. My kitchen did have a lot of bells and whistles but there were some things  I wanted to change. We have so many baking trays, cookie sheets, cutting boards, cooling racks etc. In my old kitchen, I did have a tray cabinet but it was not large enough for everything we had.

It is not a matter of getting rid of some of it because we cook and bake all the time and use it all. So we added more slotted storage to our kitchen. The cabinet above the refrigerator is one that we hardly used. It contained some light bulbs and a container of glue. We  added tray storage up there and I think it is going to be great.

We also have a bottom tray cabinet next to the stove as we did before and over the ovens we put more slotted storage. We have an oven drawer under the double ovens as we did before to handle frequently used pans and sheets.

Something else I am super excited about, are the great pull out cabinets we put on the other side of our cooktop. If you think our tray situation was excessive, our collection of spatulas, ladles, cooking spoons and other cooking tools rivals it. Currently, we had two large utensil drawers and 2 large crocks on the counter. I wanted to find a more useful and out-of-sight way to store what we needed.

Browsing Pinterest, I found these great pull out cabinets with crocks built-in. I showed them to my kitchen designer who incorporated them into the design. The insert is made by a company called Rev-a-Shelf, and they have so many creative ways to get the most out of your kitchen.

We have another pull out cabinet like that but with a different insert that can handle our cooking oils, sprays etc. In an upper cabinet to the right of the cooktop we have our spice cabinet.

Being tall, I hate having to stoop down to see all the way to the back of lower cabinets. In my current kitchen, there are only three cabinets I had to do that. The rest all had roll outs or were drawer units. In this kitchen we made sure that there are no cabinets that would cause me to lay on the floor or crawl into to see what is in the back.

I eliminated the desk area and glass door cabinet that was above it from my current kitchen. We did not use the desk and it was a catch-all for everything as were the glass door cabinets. In its place we added some more pull out pantry storage which I am crazy about.

The new refrigerator is being set into cabinets to give it a built-in look. On the side of my fridge in my other kitchen, I had decorative raised panels that matched the cabinets. In our new kitchen design we added some useful storage.  We are putting in a functioning cabinet that will have lower storage for our broom, dust pan etc and upper storage for cleaning supplies, garbage bags etc. Something similar to this design I saw on Pinterest.

In the new kitchen we have extended all our upper cabinets to 42″. This extra cabinet space will give us the room we need to store appliances that we don’t use every day. We are removing the extended sofits to make room for the taller cabinets. On top of the cabinets we will add a very nice crown molding.

We are in the process of picking out our new quartz counters. In my old kitchen I had quartz counters and I love them. However, I want a little more movement in the new ones. I think I have found my countertop but not 100% sure.

Regina had me bring home my door sample and a large sample of the counter to look at it in the kitchen to make it easier for me to decide.

We are putting in a Farmhouse sink from Nantucket sinks and it has a really nice drain that we also chose from their website that never lets your hands touch the mess in the drain. Really cool and that is not all!

The sink has two front sides so you can choose what design you want. The smooth front of the Hyannis or the decorative side of the Chatham. I still have to pick the faucet. Oh, all the decisions!

We love the built-in butcher block we have in our old kitchen and so we went with one in this design also. It will be built into the side of the island to the right of the prep sink. We placed the pull out waste and recycling underneath so you can peel and chop and then just shove scraps right into the trash. To the side of the cutting board we put a large drawer to store our knives, and next to that, we put our utensil storage.

Another big change we are making is using two of the large island drawers to hold our dishes with a peg drawer inserts. This will make it easier to set the table and for the kids to get dishes themselves without having to climb up to reach them in upper cabinets. We added about 12 inches to the length of our island and this allowed us to put a 12 inch cabinet on the end with doors to store serving pieces, dishes and glasses.

Over the cooktop we have an English Country Elliptical Range Hood that matches the cabinets. I am not certain we are going with this style but I am leaning toward it.

The microwave will be hung over the counter next to the double ovens.

All of the cabinet doors and drawers are soft close and the doors are the full overlay style. We picked out our hardware too and I really like the way it looks and feels. The drawer pulls are nice and large and can accommodate hands of all sizes.

We have a large storage pantry in the same spot we did before but instead of having those wooden racks that pull and slide out to hold cans, we have added slide out shelf pull outs that our designer tells me I will find much more useful.

We are using commercial style appliances and I will update you on those in another post. For the flooring we are going to do a wood look porcelain tile. It is someone like the one I have but darker which I think will make the cabinets pop!

I think this is a long enough update for now. We have some exciting things to share regarding lighting with you soon. Let me know what you think of what we have picked out so far.

Is Facebook Creating Hoarders?

I have written about extreme couponing before and my major gripe with it was that the products people were stockpiling were toxic. They out-gas their containers and create toxic air in their homes. Not to mention, they are filled with toxic ingredients and using them can result in miscarriage, infertility, birth defects, cancer and more.

Today, there is something  that is gaining great popularity on Facebook and other social media that I feel is responsible for out of control buying of all kinds of products. They are called glitch groups and the members post about all kinds of pricing mistakes online and in stores.

This week, one of the glitches posted was not really a glitch but a clearance price of $.30 for a can of holiday scented Febreeze spray at a major retailer. Photo after photo of people walking out of the store with shopping carts full of these holiday scented, fabric fresheners was posted. Many were walking out with cases of Febreeze.

Now, if you don’t know, Febreeze is one of the most toxic products you can use, it can cause central nervous system damage among other things. Try to share a word to the wise and it is obvious they are not wise and you are a hater. That is fine, if they want to stack their cancer-in-a-can, fabric freshener in pretty little rows in their stockpile, there is not much I can do. Even speaking to them as the mother of a cancer survivor, they do not want anyone to steal the joy that a cart full of Febreeze can bring them.

Worse are the ones who are not stacking it in neat little rows but coming home and adding it to rooms that are already stacked to the gills with other glitch, clearance or sale items they have found. It is not hard for things to get out of control and I truly believe it is a dangerous addiction.

I know how exciting it can be to find the deal of the century. I used to shop like that, it was not for toxic things but if I found games, toys, kitchen items, craft items etc. at a great price, I bought them up faster than you could say C-L-U-T-T-E-R. I ended up giving so much of it away in an attempt to clear my garage of boxes of the stuff that for a time, I used to sell on eBay until they raised their fees so high, it did not pay.

I know some of these Glitchers are selling at local swap sales, online yard sales, Craigslist, Amazon or other sites. Good for them! If they are moving products out for a profit that is super.  The problem lies when things are not moving out and more and more things are moving in. This out of control bargain shopping addiction can be brutal.

Recently, they were posting about Christmas trees for a penny at a major retailer. I found a 12 ft. tree and since we did have to replace ours, I was thrilled to find one ringing up at around $60. It was a beautiful 12 ft. pre-lit tree, almost exactly like our other one that needed replacing that retailed at over $800.

Yet theses Glitchers almost made me hang my head in shame that I was not able to get it for a penny. Had I not been aware of these Glitchers, I would have been thrilled to get this deal. Darn Glitchers making others feel bad. I was surprised when one of them found one of the trees but it was ringing up at $12 and she did not want it at that price. Say what? I don’t know about you but I thought $60 was a super deal.

However, I don’t think anything is a super deal if you don’t need it, are not going to give it to someone or don’t sell it. If you are buying just to buy, you are going to end up being on Hoarders:Buried Alive.

Clearance or bargain shopping used to be something that people enjoyed solo or with a spouse or friend. Sometimes they would tell  family and friends about the awesome deals and that is where it ended.

With these groups now all over social media, it is becoming a contest of just how many Pioneer Woman frying pans you can score for $4 or how many $9 Barbie Dreamhouses you can fit in your car and still have room for yourself in an Instagram selfie. Posting the photo and reading the comments can be a real adrenaline rush. We know shopping addiction is real and I truly think social media is taking it to a level we have not seen before.

What do you think? Please share your thoughts.
