My Mom Confession-I Hate Halloween!

There, I said it! I am not one of those moms who obsesses for months over the perfect costume. I don’t look forward to going out trick or treating with my kids. It is not that I don’t enjoy being with my kids, it is just that there is so much I would rather be doing with them. In fact, it is their happiness that keeps me doing it. It is nothing religious or anything like that. As a kid it was fun, but it was not over the top fun. When we were done trick or treating, I was glad it was over and actually liked answering the door for the kids and handing out candy better.

halloween-party-tips

The weather in upstate New York is so unpredictable. I can remember so many Halloweens where my kids had to go trick or treating in winter coats. You could not even see their costumes. It would be raw and bitter cold and you would go to as many houses as you could before your ears froze off. Of course our neighbors are few and far between as we live in a rural area so that means driving and with little kids that means buckling them in and out of car seats every 2 minutes. Car seats with costumes is not fun, car seats with costumes and winter coats is excruciatingly not fun.frost

On the years when the weather is nice, it is tolerable once we arrive at a quaint neighborhood in town. There we can park and walk from house to house. We meet up with friends and it is enjoyable, for a while.

halloween-2

Once the chill creeps in and the kids start comparing who got what and bickering over the fact, that one got a Snickers and one got a Kit Kat at the last house.  Soon after that I will make the announcement that we are going to the last 2 houses and calling it a night. Sometime they moan that they want to do more even though their buckets are overflowing with candy and sometimes they are just as glad to be done. As soon as we get to the car, you can see their exhaustion and they are happy to be headed home.

halloween-safety-2

The worst part is when Halloween falls on a weekday. Of course, this year, it is not only on a weekday but that weekday is Monday! It is getting dark earlier, the kids don’t get off the school bus until 4:10 pm. If we are lucky their teachers will not assign the usual mountain of homework. It will still be an immediate rush to get them dressed and in the car to head out to a Trunk or Treat in town and then to that little neighborhood and hit our neighbors who want so much to see the kids and always have special things for them.

After that it will be a rush home, fighting about who got what and why can’t they eat any more candy. Then it will be showers and bedtime. After that, I will be so grateful we survived and we don’t have to think about this for another year! Oh wait, where was dinner? Where does dinner fit in here? See what I mean? It is crazy! Does any parent really enjoy this?

wheres-dinner

Let me not forget to mention, Halloween comes on the heels of a jam-packed weekend of a Halloween Parade we all marched in down to the youth center where there were games, cider, donuts and more. On Sunday, the last soccer game of the season was on despite the torrential rain and chilly weather. Everyone was drenched, freezing and wanting to get home and warm. We all had to wait until the awards and the party was finished.

raining

So there is my big confession, I don’t like Halloween! There would be no argument from me if it was cancelled. If it cannot be cancelled, I wish we could all agree to celebrate it on the last Saturday of October, so no one needs to juggle all this on a school night.

Oh, one more thing, I am not a huge fan of birthday parties either.

5 Benefits Of Compression Arm Sleeves You Need To Know!

You might not be familiar with compression arm sleeves. If you aren’t, there is no better time to start getting acquainted with them all the benefits they offer. Keep reading to learn about 6 health benefits that compression arm sleeves like SLEEFS can provide.

Protection

Compression arm sleeves work as an added layer of protection over your skin. If you are playing contact sports, they can help protect you from bumps, scrapes and cuts that could occur as you go up against other athletes. They also protect your arms from the damaging UV rays of the sun. Many people use them on one arm when they are driving. If you are the kind of person that likes to drive with the window down and your arm out, you need an arm sleeve!

Promote Blood Circulation

When you have a sports injury, it can cause you to have poor blood circulation in the injured area. In turn, that can cause swelling and inflammation. Compression arm sleeves can help improve the blood circulation which can prevent swelling and inflammation while promoting healing.

Regulate Body Temperature

Do you play outdoor sports? If you do, wearing compression sleeves help regulate your body temperature. No matter if it is hot or cold outside, they help keep your body temperature regular.

Preventing Muscle Soreness

Compression sleeves serve to loosen up your muscles so they won’ t hinder your performance. They will also work after to prevent soreness and tightness.

Helps Injuries Heal Quicker and Muscles Recover Faster

The increased blood flow caused from wearing compression sleeves helps your body heal quicker and your recovery time from injury can be significantly shorter.

My daughter is a runner and cyclist, she loves compression arm sleeves! She likes the way they feel and the way they regulate her body temperature when competing. She is running in the upcoming New York City Marathon and the weather has suddenly turned quite chilly. Having Arm Sleeves is a great way to deal with those fluctuating temperature changes.

A great site for arm sleeves is SLEEFS. About a week ago I placed an order for a couple of pairs. They have sizes for kids right through to adults. There are lots of styles and colors to choose from and you can even design your own! My daughter selected the Gorilla style in honor of Harambe.

I ordered a purple lightning style that looked really cool. You can order one sleeve or two depending on your needs, we ordered pairs.

So have you ever tried arm sleeves? If you have, I would love to hear how you use them. If you have never tried them, check out SLEEFS and try some today! If you are in New York City for the marathon, cheer my daughter on, she will be the one with the Gorilla arm SLEEFS on!

How To Save on Things To Do with #Groupon

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

groupon-child

Kids grow so fast, it seems time is racing and we are trying to create as many lifelong memories as we can before they leave  home. You may feel that it will be ages before that happens but I can tell you, it happens in the blink of an eye. I was blessed to be able to start all over again after my first three were in their teens. So now, with 2 little ones, I know how fast it truly goes. I have not discovered a way to stop time or travel back in time, so I am just trying to treasure the moments we have.

groupon

Some of our favorite ways to make great memories are to do things together as a family. That is why I love Groupon so much! Their site is my go-to when looking to do things in the area. When I find something I want to do or a place I want to go to and I can save big with Groupon, I feel like a champion. The money we save, means our dollars go farther and we can do more for less. Who doesn’t want to save these days?

Do You Feel Like You Are Failing As A Parent? You Are Not Alone!

Raising children is not for the faint of heart. Have you ever felt overwhelmed, frustrated to the point you lose your temper and yell or scream at your kids? Do you feel at your wit’s ends fighting the same battles, day after day with your children? Is it hard for you to wrap your mind around how they cannot stop doing the things that are getting them in trouble?

frustrated-child

No matter what you do, the same behavior is repeated again and again. Does it leave you so frustrated that you count the hours until bedtime? Do you feel guilty for sometimes not wanting to be around your kids because of how they behave? Do you feel terrible for this and feel you are a failure as a parent? Do you think you must be doing something wrong?

You don’t have to tell me the answers to these questions. If you are a parent, it is safe to say that you nodded your head in agreement to most of these things, maybe even all of them. I want to tell you, that it is okay, you are not the only one. We will fail as parents, many times.

I picked up a really good parenting book the other day. The book is titled, Parenting: 14 Gospel Principals That Can Radically Change Your Family. The author, Paul David Tripp, is the executive director for the Center for Pastoral Life and Care in Fort Worth, Texas. More than that, he is a dad, a dad who has felt those same things.

parenting-book

I will admit when I picked up the book, I expected it to be preachy and written by a man who was a “perfect” parent, who would tell me everything I was doing wrong. I could not have been more wrong. Right from the Introduction, I saw this was a parent I could relate to, one that struggled in the same ways I did. Nothing was sugar-coated, he was real and the pages are full of wisdom. It is real, he writes about situations of parents who are struggling through parenting. If you are like me, you may find their stories very familiar. Sometimes it is nice to know we are not alone.

frustrated-child-crying

One of the things I think will resonate with most parents is the chapter on authority. The author says to never exercise your authority over  your child in an angry, impatient, abusive or selfish way. This means, you do not let your anger at your child’s disobedience control you so you do things you should not. For example, it means that you do not pinch, poke, slap, yank or shove your child. It also means that you do not combine your discipline with berating, condemning or demeaning talk. That means you don’t say things like; “What are you, stupid?” “I can’t believe that you’re my daughter!” and other similar phrases.

mother-angry

He does not say this as a perfect parent who has never done this but as one who openly admits doing this to his son after a particularly grueling day. He admits his shortcomings but lets us know that through God’s grace we can always start new. Facts are, we will fail many times as parents and that is okay, we don’t have to feel guilty because we have that grace.

parenting

The chapters are the 14 Gospel Principals as they apply to parenting; Calling, Grace, Law, Inability, Identity, Process, Lost, Authority, Foolishness, Character, False Gods, Control, Rest and Mercy. The author’s favorite passage in the Bible about parenting is one you might not expect. It is one of the final commandments Jesus made to his disciples.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and          make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,                teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you always, to the end of the                age.” (Matt. 28:18-20)

There is so much in this book that is just profound and really hit home for me. You can read an excerpt HERE or listen to an audio click HERE. I hope you check it out and let me know what you think. You can also enter to win a copy below in our giveaway.

The Easy Way Showcase Your Special Moments

poster

My entire life, I’ve loved doing arts and crafts projects, especially collages. After vacations and other big events, I enjoy compiling photos to make a collage full of memories.  I mean, what better way to cherish the moments than have them frozen in time in a personal collage? So naturally, after a summer full of traveling, I knew a collage would be happening in the near future.

postermywall6

I started going through the hundreds of photos I took this summer and selecting the ones I thought should go in the collage. Around that time, I heard about PosterMyWall from a colleague who thought I would love it.

postermywall7

I heard all about the amazing templates, including a category for family collages that are on their site!  Suddenly, my project seemed so simple. I still had to finish sorting through my online albums, it took me a bit to decide which images to select. The actual uploading of the images and customizing my design only took a few minutes!!! With the site’s online tools (we’re talking backgrounds, images, filters, etc.), I designed and purchased a 24×36″ poster collage.

postermywall5

The collage arrived fairly quickly, and everyone loved it. My family loved talking about our summer adventures when we opened up the package! Now we use PosterMyWall to create similar gifts for friends and family. If you want to see what other products PosterMyWall offers, check out this page.

postermywall4

Update: I have to say when I was ordering, it kept telling me that I did not have enough photos, but I had so many photos selected. I kept adding more until I did not receive the warning. When I got my poster, the thumbnails were so small and so many of them made it so busy. I really was not happy that all the photos were so small. I would not pay attention to that if I ordered again. I would add much less so that you can see the photos.

Halloween Costumes Kids Love #PJMasks

Halloween is a week away! If you are still undecided on a costume for your child, I might be able to help. As a PJ Masks Official Blogger, I was sent a Catboy Deluxe Mask and a Gekko Deluxe Costume and they are a hit with my boys and myself. My boys have a treasure trove of costumes because they dress up in costumes all the time, it is one of their favorite things to do. So they were ecstatic when these costumes arrived.

pj-masks-halloween

As a mom, I really like that the costumes have details that glow in the dark. With it getting darker earlier, it is often dark when we go trick-or-treating and this feature makes it easier for kids to be seen. The quality of the costumes is very good and they have nice big eye holes so that kids can see clearly with no obstruction.

If you do have PJ Masks fans in your home, you can find some great activities, printables, crafts and more HERE! Let me know what you think of the costumes and if you try any of the activities.
