Poopendous by Artie Bennett Review & Giveaway!!!

I have to admit I more than laughed when approached by Artie Bennett asking if I would like to review his number 2 book, Poopendous.  It is his second book but his number 2 book has a second meaning because the book is about poop.  If you have kids, you know that it is not uncommon for poop to be a subject of many conversations so this book is of great interest to them.  It is funny but covers all kinds of poop and some interesting facts like monkeys throw poop when they are stressed or that termites build their homes out of poop or that at county fairs cow poop is just great for tossing and how fly poop is just specks.  If your children are like mine this book will have great appeal and you will probably be asked to read it again as I was right after the first time.  If you are looking for an unusual book, filled with facts about number 2 then this is for you!

Rhyming couplets feature Professor Poopdeck and two young friends as he takes them on a type of poop safari. Words for poop (i.e. guano, number two, ca-ca), its forms and styles (cubes, tubular, wet and dry), and myriad of uses (i.e. souvenirs, a means of tracking and marking, housing insulation, food, fertilizer, fuel) are all conveyed with humor and a certain demand for respect. It’s a book that says: Don’t just flush this stuff away! While it may dismay and stink, there’s more to this stuff than you might think!

Artie is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings and one lucky blog reader will win an autographed hardcover copy of Poopendous!  Thank you Artie for the review book and for sponsoring this stupendous giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.

“Meet The Feeling Friends” Book and CD Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Meet The Feeling Friends!!!

As a parent, I know how important it is to teach children from the youngest age possible about feelings.  Their feelings, the feelings of people around them and healthy and appropriate ways to express their feelings. Sometimes it’s hard to explain things to a young child in a way they will understand and identify with.  When I find a product that allows me to open a dialogue with my children about issues that are complex, I feel the need to share.  Recently, I was sent, “Meet the Feeling Friends” Book and CD to review.  This book is written by Karen D. Cuthrell (KK) who co-created the Feeling Friends nearly 15 years ago, in an inspired response to her young daughter’s need to express her inner feelings open and honestly.  Each Feeling Friend evolved as a loving guide and conduit for sharing even those hard-to-reveal emotions.

Journey to Feeling Free Island and join KK as she introduces you to her bakers’ dozen of delightful Friends – characters that symbolize the array of primary feelings considered universal to humanity; love, joy, worry, anger, sadness, happiness, loneliness, grumpiness, shyness, panic, caution and confidence!

This book and CD empowers children to identify and express the feelings that hide inside them waiting to be recognized and understood. They give parents and children the vocabulary to talk to each other about feelings. “The Feeling Friends characters are animals and insects presented in real-life situations that teach children about feelings and healthy ways to express them. They are good for children,” says school psychologist Kathy J. Philyaw, Ph.D.

Meet the Feeling Friends™ book and CD allows each Feeling Friend to reveal his or her identity while experiencing the benefits of sharing feelings. The Feeling Friends thrive in the ideal climate where honesty, truth, mutual respect, appropriate timing, and expression, come together to create security and acceptance of feelings – for ourselves and others.

In this delightfully illustrated book you will meet characters like, Worry the Fear Worm, who like his name worries constantly.  Angie the Angry Tiger uses words when he gets mad.  No hitting, punching, kicking or biting, even when he’s angry there’s never any fighting.  You’ll meet Lotta Love the LovaRoo and Joy Bird who sings songs of joy.  Ida the I-Can-Bee is not afraid to follow its dreams and Flutter the Shy Butterfly who has a great big voice inside her.  Your child will absolutely love learning about these characters, and this book is sure to be a springboard that will stimulate a young child to talk about their feelings.

I am feeling very excited to let you know that The Feeling Friends is sponsoring a give-away on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win their own “Meet the Feeling Friends” Book and CD.  Thanks to The Feeling Friends for this great review set and wonderful give-away that makes me feel happy!!!  Open to US residents.

“Unmeasured Strength” by Lauren Manning, Review & Give-Away With 5 Winners!!!

A few weeks before the 10th anniversary of 9/11 I was sent a book to review.  The book, “Unmeasured Strength” is the gripping tale of Lauren Manning’s long fight back from a devastating burn injury, that easily could have killed her.  Lauren worked at Cantor Fitzgerald where she ran the Global Market Data division.  Lauren was running late that day, she was normally at her desk on the 104th floor by 8am. Walking into the north tower, unaware that a plane had struck, she had been engulfed by a fireball as jet fuel poured down an elevator shaft and exploded. On her back in the midst of the horror, debris raining down around her, Lauren made the decision to live — for her baby Tyler, then 10 months old.  Lauren had been burned on 82 percent of her body giving her just an 18 percent chance to survive.  This book is her journey from the brink of death back to living again.

With her husband’s unconditional love and support she pushes through surgeries, therapies and extreme pain in sheer determination to be with her family again.  I found it very hard to put this book down and read it through in about 3 nights.  This book not only chronicles Lauren’s road home again but tells us of the struggles she has once home, her quest to have another baby, to be an active mom, how to deal with the loss of so many of her co-workers.  It is tragic and triumphant, a true store of a woman who refused to die, who made a decision that she was going to live, she would see her son again.

Lauren gives us glimpses of her childhood, her courtship and marriage to her husband Greg, whom she stood by when he was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor, their struggle to have their first son, and conflict about Greg wanting to change career paths.  I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a story of one woman’s incredible strength and determination to live again. Lauren Manning’s story of surviving the 9/11 attacks has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC’s Today Show, and many other media outlets around the world; CNN recently chose her as one of the most intriguing newsmakers of the past twenty-five years.

I am thrilled to let you know that, Henry Holt & Co. is sponsoring a give-away on Mommy Ramblings.  5 lucky blog readers will win their own copy of “Unmeasured Strength.”  Thank you Henry Holt & Co. for the review book and for sponsoring this wonderful give-away on Mommy Ramblings!!!

Fierce Fun Toys, Ben KaChoo Book & Toy Set Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Books are a big deal at our house and so are stuffed friends.  So when I received the Ben KaChoo Book & Toy Set from Fierce Fun Toys, I knew my kids would love it. The story of Ben KaChoo “Sink or Swim”  is an important one for little ones to hear.  Ben KaChoo is a bright eyed, young hippo who happens to have allergies.  Living in the swamp, there are many irritants that cause Ben to sneeze a lot.  Ben has discovered, that his sneezes can jet him through the water, which is quite fun.  One day,  his jetting thrusts him into a napping alligator named Arrow.  The hippos and the alligators keep their distance in the swamp and stay with their own kind.  Ben is scared, he wonders if Arrow will start a fight.  Instead, he ends up being friends with Arrow, and he learns that just because you are different does not mean you cannot be friends.  This is a great story that teaches children a valuable lesson.  What makes the story really fun is the plush Ben KaChoo that comes in this set.  This cuddly 10 inch hippo offers  six different ‘sneezes’, along with an “Whoa”, and “Excuse me” with a squeeze of his tail!  My little ones loved squeezing his tail while I read the story.  The 32 page brightly illustrated book has a page of stickers at the back that are so cute.  I think these book sets are great and a fun way to teach your children important values.

Fierce Fun Toys is the in the business of bringing humor and big messages to growing minds.  Fierce Fun Toys, LLC is a philanthropic for-profit company that donates a portion of their proceeds to a  few amazing charities that help children everywhere, including Half the Sky, which supports orphans in China, and The Smile Train, helping children with cleft lip/palette worldwide.  This company believes in giving back and I think that is so great.  I really love supporting companies who make a difference in the world.

I am thrilled to announce that Fierce Fun Toys is sponsoring a give-away on Mommy Ramblings.  One lucky blog reader will win their own Ben KaChoo Book & Toy Set.  Thank you Fierce Fun Toys for the review set and for sponsoring this great give-away on Mommy Ramblings.  Open to US and Canadian Residents.

Mighty Casey is a Mighty Good Book!!!

I love books, love to read, love to read to my kids and love finding great children’s books.  My husband will tell you I have too many books.  I know it is all moving to electronic readers but I have not fully embraced that yet.  One area I really feel the need for a real book is when I read to my kids.  I mean it is so engrained in me from being read to as a child, to being read to in school.  We had this great librarian in elementary school and she would always end our library day with reading us a book.  She made a very big production and would light a candle and when she was finished the story, she had one of those brass candle snuffers to put it out.  This was very cool for a 7 year old and I would recreate that scene many times as I played school as a child.

I have always loved reading to my kids and started when they were born.  Actually I read a lot when they were in utero.  I even had the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh Baby, The Places You’ll Go!” which was written to read to our children in utero.  My older kids loved to go to book stores more than toy stores and we went often.  We would come out with armfuls of books and everyone would be so happy.  Unlike me, my older kids can read in the car without getting sick and you would never find my daughter without a book.  Her love of books was so memorable that her brother who was a little more than 18 months younger wrote a story in 4th grade about how she had packed way too many books on a flight to our vacation and the plane crashed.   When we crash landed, the bag of books fell on her 3-year-old brother’s leg and broke it.  It was a funny story and since they had the same 4th grade teacher, she could not help but laugh because she knew how true the story could be.

Anyway, so now the two little ones are in that great stage of loving being read to.  Last weekend I went to a favorite store of mine, that is a book goldmine.  I was by myself and took a long time perusing over the many children’s titles.  I got some books for their Easter baskets but I also got some nice story books.  I have not gotten to read that many of the new books because my 3 year old is obsessed with one of the books.  I knew when I saw it he would like it because it was about baseball, but I did not know how much he would love it.  We read it a few times and then he pours over the pages himself.  He knows the names of the kids on the team.  In the stands we have to find Daddy, Mommy and all his brothers and sister.  We talk about the various things the kids are doing and I cannot tell you how much he loves this book.  Luke (2) likes it too but Ethan just loves it.  The funniest thing was when my husband read it for the first time to the kids, he started tearing up at the end.  I mean it is a feel good story about an underdog team of pretty bad players coming through in the end.  If you have a little sports fan, you should check out this book.  It is great for us because Ethan is about to start his first season of T-ball.  I highly recommend this book.  It is titled, “Mighty Casey” and it is by James Preller and illustrated by Matthew Cordell.
