Celebrate Earth Day With Flight of the Honey Bee, Little Pear Tree & E.I.E.I.O!!!

Candlewick Press

April 22nd is Earth Day and I want to tell you about some great books you can read with your child to celebrate.

Flight of the Honey Bee by Raymond Huber:

Your child will get to follow the flight of a honey bee as she searches for nectar to sustain her hive and, along the way, pollinates flowers to produce seeds and fruits.

Flight of the Honey Bee

A tiny honey bee emerges from the hive for the first time. Using sunlight, landmarks, and scents to remember the path, she goes in search of pollen and nectar to share with the thousands of other bees in her hive. She uses her powerful sense of smell to locate the flowers that sustain her, avoids birds that might eat her, and returns home to share her finds with her many sisters. Nature lovers and scientists-to-be are invited to explore the fascinating life of a honey bee.The back of the book gives examples of how to save the bees that you can discuss as a family as well as an index.

Little Pear Tree by Jenny Bowers:

little pear tree

Children will be captivated as they watch a tiny seed grows through the seasons into a fine pear tree in this beautiful book. This format showcases vibrant artwork with more than twenty-five flaps that you lift to discover creatures hidden in every scene. The charming text makes this the perfect interactive primer to a key scientific topic.

E.I.E.I.O, How Old MacDonald Got His Farm With A Little Help From a Hen by Judy Sierra:

eieio

The Little Red Hen gives Old MacDonald some pointers on composting — and a legendary farm is born — in this rhyming, rollicking read-aloud. Once upon a time, Old MacDonald didn’t have a farm. He just had a yard — a yard he didn’t want to mow. But under the direction of the wise (and ecologically sensitive) Little Red Hen, Mac learns to look at the environment in a very different way, and whole new worlds start to bloom with the help of some mud, garbage, horse poop, and worms!

Judy Sierra’s spirited verse, paired with Matthew Myers’s exuberant illustrations, yields a fresh take on a children’s classic, complete with raised-bed gardens and an organic farmers’ market—making this a perfect story for armchair gardeners and devoted locavores of all sizes.

Enter To Win All 3 Books:

My kids love books and these 3 were a big hit and have spurred some great conversation about nature, growing plants and trees and of course all the ways bees are essential in our world.  Candlewick Press is sponsoring a giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!  One luck blog reader will win all three of these books!  Thank you to Candlewick Press for the review books and for sponsoring this Earth Day Giveaway on Mommy Ramblings!!!  Open to US residents.

As a book loving mama with a book loving family, I received an early Christmas present recently.  A great selection of books for the holiday season.  What a great selection of books and we have been voraciously reading through them each night at bedtime.  Candlewick has been so gracious as to offer to host a giveaway for our readers!  One lucky Mommy Ramblings reader will win the four books below:

The Smallest Gift of Christmas written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds.

The Smallest Gift of Christmas Book

Roland can’t wait for Christmas Day, and when the morning finally arrives he races downstairs to see what is waiting for him. What he sees stops him in his tracks. Could that tiny present really be what he had waited all year for? It has to be the smallest gift he had ever seen! So Roland wishes for something bigger . . . and bigger . . . and bigger. But he’s still convinced there must be a bigger gift somewhere in the universe. Will he know it when he sees it? Peter H. Reynolds’s spare, free-spirited illustrations and heartwarming text make this be-careful what-you-wish-for story the perfect holiday gift.In Peter H. Reynolds’s whimsical holiday story young Roland learns that more isn’t always better — and rediscovers the magic of home.

Forever written and illustrated by Emma Dodd.

Forever

Love between parent and child lasts a lifetime; this is the beautiful message in Emma Dodd’s Forever. Featuring stunning, foil-embellished illustrations of a polar-bear family, this book makes a handsome addition to any nursery bookshelf and is the perfect read-aloud for parent-child bonding at bedtime.  How long does a parent’s love last? Forever!

Toys Galore
If you’re game, open up the world’s wackiest toy chest, where anything and everything can turn into nonstop, action-packed fun. Once again, Peter Stein’s playful verse and Bob Staake’s uproarious illustrations come together in an explosion of color and whimsy, while imagination takes center stage as the best toy of all. Toys Galore is one playground you won’t want to miss!  Look out below! Let your creativity soar as toys of all shapes and sizes squeak, zip, and whirl across the page.

Dragonology

Do you believe in dragons? Now, for the first time, the long-lost research of renowned nineteenth century dragonologist Dr. Ernest Drake is presented in all its eccentric glory, happily bridging the gap between dragon legend and fact. The meticulous Dr. Drake assigns Latin names to various dragon species, ruminates on why dragons are able to speak, speculates on how they could fly, and explains the true purpose of their notorious hoarding habits. Here are just a few of DRAGONOLOGY’S fascinating features:

— Novelty item on every spread, including tactile samples of dragon wings, dragon scales, and dragon skin
— Booklet of dragon riddles (indispensable to the burgeoning dragonologist)
— Sealed envelope containing a powerful dragon-calling spell
— Embossed faux leather cover with silver foil, encrusted with three dragon gems

In his afterword, Dr. Drake reveals that one of the crucial goals of dragonologists is to preserve the magnificent creatures of their study wherever possible – a goal this tongue-in-cheek volume most affectionately achieves. An incomparable gift for secret dragonologists everywhere!  For true believers only, a lavishly illustrated reproduction of a legendary volume by the world’s most distinguished dragonologist. Don’t let it fall into the wrong hands!

Vicky Lansky’s Books, 101 Ways To Tell Your Child “I Love You” & Toilet Training (2 books in one) A Practical Guide to Daytime and Nighttime Training Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

I recently was sent 2 of Vicky Lansky’s books to review.  The first one was, 101 Ways To Tell Your Child “I Love You”  This book was newly updated and re-published.  This 124 page book gives you lots of cute ideas to use to tell your child that you love them.  It is so important that our children know we love them.   I really like the ideas in this book such as leaving little notes in unexpected places, hanging red hearts in a doorway, making your child a special, welcome home banner on the first day of school and much more.  This book gives you many ways to say I love you to your child other than just saying the three words.  It is so important for our children’s emotional health to let them know often and in many ways how much we love them.  I really think this is a great little book.

The next book is the revised and updated, Toilet Training, A Practical Guide to Daytime and Nighttime Training.  This book also includes a bonus book, Koko Bear’s New Potty, which is a book for your child.  This book covers how to set the stage for toilet training, recognize readiness, choosing a potty seat, dressing your child for success, dealing with an uncooperative child, handling accidents, how to cope when traveling and much more.  The bonus book, KoKo Bear’s New Potty, is a read-together book that is wonderfully illustrated and includes a great unisex story that will help make toilet training easy and fun.

Vicky Lansky is generously sponsoring a give-away here on Mommy Ramblings.  One of our blog readers will win both of these books (3 counting the bonus book.)  Thank you Vicky for supplying the review books and the give-away books.
