“The Girl With A Mind For Math:The Story of Raye Montague” Book Review & Giveaway

The message in The Girl With A Mind For Math:The Story of Raye Montague is, if there is something you want, you need to focus your mind on it. Your dream may seem out of reach, people may tell you that you can’t do it, but you need to keep going, and you will succeed,  like one bold engineer named Raye Montague.

This is a story of a woman who realized her dream when basically everything was against her. Being born a girl of color in the south where segregated schools were the norm, Raye was met with negativity at nearly every turn, when she talked about becoming an engineer who designs ships.

Raye was lucky to have the support of her family, they told her to keep going no matter what. Raye was resourceful, when the schools did not teach what she wanted to learn, she learned it on her own. She was a voracious reader, and even when she found out engineering was not offered to her in college. she took business instead.

Raye went to Washington, D.C. after graduating college with honors and landed a position as a typist for the Navy. There she not only did her job, but learned all she could from the ship designing engineers. At night she went to school to learn computers.

It all paid off even though Raye faced discrimination for being black and being a woman. She never let that stop her, and pushed through the barriers she needed to. A stroke of luck got her promoted when she got to show off all she knew. Learning computers helped her design a special system to design a ship for the president in just 18 hours.

This is a book about rising above all the odds. It is inspirational and educational. Great to read to your kids, grandkids or use in the classroom. The end of the book has pages about Raye’s real life, advice from her and a timeline of all she achieved. The book is written by Julia Finley Mosca and is illustrated by Daniel Rieley.

Watch Season 4 of ANNEDROIDS on Amazon Prime Video Now!

Are your kids fans of Annedroids? If they are, you probably know the brand new, sci-sational season just began on Friday, March 3rd! You can view the Emmy-nominated Amazon Original Kids adventure series on Prime Video.

It is a very interesting and fun show that I enjoy watching with my kids. I like that it is a show that is full of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts presented in an entertaining way. The show follows Anne, a young female scientist and her human friends, along with the android assistants she has created as they make amazing scientific discoveries while undertaking the biggest experiment of all: growing up!

Season 4 sheds light on the concept of a modern-day family, where “family” isn’t necessarily defined by blood relation, but rather by the people closest to you. In this season, Anne, Nick and Shania band together and use scientific approaches to solve myriad problems, including getting lost in the wilderness, dealing with a friend moving out-of-town, building a robot for competition, and defending the junkyard from a hostile takeover – which leads to an epic, action-packed season finale!

This is a series that challenges kids to think and not just mindlessly sit in front of the TV. My kids don’t watch much TV but when they do, I want it to be something that enriches their mind, and this show does just that! I hope you check it out and let me know what you think.

A Building Kit That Teaches Kids About Engineering! #Giveaway #HolidayGiftGuide

My kids are very interested in building things, when I saw the Survive the Quake Engineering Kit, I knew they would love it. I was not wrong, this great kit puts their building skills to the ultimate test. They need to build structures that will survive an earthquake! quake

Building on the earthquake simulator that simulates quakes in 5 levels of intensity they have to think about what kind of structures will remain standing despite the shaking. The kit comes with 30 plastic building blocks in a variety of shapes and sizes. quake-1

I really like all the information that is in the activity book. It talks about engineers who design buildings to withstand earthquakes, the reason earthquakes occur and more.quake-book

I think this would be a great kit to have in a classroom as well. My kids really like this and they quickly learned the best way to build buildings that could withstand even a level 5 simulated earthquake.
