Cake Pop Prep and Funfetti Brownies.

The first step to making the cake pops is to make a cake.  Actually, the recipe on this mold recommends using a bag of crushed oreos and a block of cream cheese but I want to make more traditional cake balls so I am going to use red velvet cake and make my own cream cheese frosting.  Anyhow, once Ethan heard I was baking a cake, it was all over.  I knew I better whip up some funfetti brownies at the same time because he could never wait through all the steps for the cake ball pops.  He sat right up next to the island in his high chair to watch every detail and to help clean away the evidence.

The brownies before baking.

The Red Velvet Batter

Pouring into the pans.  I did use a mix for the cake but I am making my own cream cheese icing.

Licking up the evidence.

Brownies are done!  Ethan was so anxious for them to be done that when they had about 5 minutes left he told me to go to the oven and push the button.  I am flattered that my son thinks I possess that kind of power, that I can miraculously just make brownies done by pushing a button.  I explained to him that they would be done when the time was up and that me pushing buttons would not make it any faster.  Silly kid.

There was no cooling that was going to happen.  I had some very impatient customers.

When I asked Ethan to smile, he told me he was eating.  Then he quickly shoved another bite in his mouth.

A mouth full of brownie and a truck, is there anything better?

Got Milk?

Sea Monkeys-Letting Kids Down One Generation At A Time!!!

If you say “Sea Monkeys” most people will have some memory of the excitement they had over the prospect of a whole kingdom of these royal Sea Monkeys.  Complete with crowns and the promise of being instant pets captured many a child.  Imagine your own little kingdom of magical Sea Monkeys! They were advertised as “eager to please” and “easy to train”  I was so excited to think of the tricks I would teach my little Sea Monkeys and the ways they would try to please me.   I remember the first time we tried we must have done something wrong because nothing happened.

A few years later, I decided to try again, armed with this huge glass vessel I prepared everything according to the package directions.  A few days later I saw the tiny little creatures moving around if I squinted really hard next to the glass.  It worked!!!  I was going to have my own kingdom!  A few days later, after school, I rushed to my room to see if they had grown while I was away.  The glass vessel was gone!  I ran to find my mother and asked her if she knew what happened to it.    Finding her I asked her if she put it somewhere.   She seemed baffled as to why I would have a large container of plain water on my dresser.  I had not told her I was growing a kingdom of Sea Monkeys, it was my secret.  When she told me she emptied it for fear it would fall on the floor, I gasped.  After I explained to her they were my Sea Monkeys and they were alive, she felt so terrible.  She did not know that she poured an entire kingdom of Sea Monkeys down the bathroom drain.   She apologized profusely and really was so remorseful that she had somehow caused the death of an entire kingdom.   She saw nothing in the water, she did not realize I was growing a kingdom.

After the second disappointment with Sea Monkeys I never ventured into that realm again but decided to stick with pets that were very visible.  Many years later I read that I am not the only child to be disappointed with these creatures.  In fact they were sold and marketed in such a way that one could only be disappointed because these “brine shrimp” were never going to look like the magical, mystical creatures on the package.  So it seems in one way or another these Sea Monkeys were just destined to let kids down.

You would think that once word got out, their sales would die and the company would go under.  That is not the case since their introduction in the late 50’s these Sea Monkeys are still around today, there to entice a new generation of children with dreams of grandeur.   Parents who suffered the disappointment even buy these for their kids and I think in a way they are hoping that something really magical will happen this time.  However, when our own children are disappointed with the results, we wonder, what we were thinking.  Yet, these Sea Monkeys keep being sold and keep disappointing generation after generation.   Talk about a product that stands the test of time!

What we were promised and enticed with:

The reality if they made it this far.  Every little girls dream!

Fun in the snow!!!

Saturday we bundled the little ones up and let them go out in the snow.    Luke was so happy the whole time as you can see in his pictures and Ethan was eating and excavating the snow.  We are due to have a much bigger snowstorm tomorrow that could bring as much as 18″ so they should have a lot of fun.    Jimi and I and the little ones went on a much-needed trip to Sams and Wegman’s last Thursday night in prep for the storm.  We stocked up on essentials and groceries and really have been enjoying being home together-all seven of us.

Alexandra is going to start volunteering with Aileen Gunther from the NYS Assembly.  She is quite excited about doing that 2 days a week.   Well, just a short update and some pics.  Hope you all have a wonderful week and stay warm and drive safe if you are in the path of the storm.  God Bless.

My New Year’s Eve Cocktail…

Well, it is technically my lunch cocktail and I drink it daily.  I mix it up a little bit but it usually always contains Kale because that is just a wonder-food.  If you read all the properties of this awesome veggie in its raw form you will be amazed.  The cancer-fighting properties alone are enough to make you consume large quantities.  So today I put in a lot of Kale, fresh organic Spinach, green grapes, fresh raw cranberries, fresh strawberries, organic baby carrots, kiwi with skin, large navel orange, large apple, small amount of water and ice cubes to top it all off.

Blended up this healthy cocktail in the Vitamix and voila, green smoothie time.

Yummy!!!  Happy New Year everyone!!!  Let’s drink to good health, increased faith, happiness and prosperity in the new year.

For those of you who question whether it tastes great or not…I leave you with this testimonial from one of my very favorite smoothie lovers.

Lastly, for those of you wondering if I am concerned about the smoothie stains…I am not, it is a great cleanser in more than one way!!!

Gingerbread Perfection!!!

Today the little boys had such a fun time decorating the gingerbread house.  Like I said in my previous post, I did not go into it with any expectations of perfection.  I set up the island with various small bowls and containers with different colored candies.  I put the assembled gingerbread frame house in the middle.  Made some fresh royal icing in the VitaMix and put it into a piping bag.  We put the boys high chairs up to  the island and they were at a perfect height to get started.  I started piping the icing but Ethan soon took over and you know what??? I did not sweat it.  It went very well, he loved piping the icing, he had a few of his own techniques but you know, it worked.  The roof got the most decorations and that was just fine.  He and Luke had a good system.  Ethan would put some icing on and tell Luke to stick the candy.  Ethan said he was “working” it was very funny and they had a great time and despite the sugar rush they both took a very good nap afterward.  When I look at the completed house with all its splendor, that is when it occurs to me, it is definitely perfection!!!

Summer Fun!!!

I know, I know!!!  I have not been a very good blogger of late.  Blame it on the Summer.  We have been having a wonderful summer and the weather has been great.  Let me get you up to date on what we have been doing.  Sylvia and I are still doing our walks and becoming even more ambitious.  The other week we took our longest walk ever!!!  It was getting dark and we saw a black bear on our way home which made us walk very fast!!!  We literally walked from my lake to another and back again, we did not clock it but it was easy over 6 miles.  It was all very good until the bear, then as we sang our way home in the dark we had a few scares.

We have also made a couple of trips to the Old Cochecton Train Station.  One time with just Jimi and I and then two little babes and another with the entire family.   We had a great time on both occasions.  We also got some great pics that will make great prints on my new gallery wall I am creating in the family room.  I could not believe how much fun even the biggest boys had at the tracks, throwing rocks and goofing around.  Good family fun!!!

After the family train trip, Alexandra and I got to head off on a girls’ night out.  She was home for the weekend before moving up to Potsdam for a new position in the political arena.  She will be there until the end of November so we had to do some major shopping and then a nice dinner at Cracker Barrel in Binghamton for some good southern comfort food to ease the fears of relocation.  She will do fine though and she knows it and we are all so proud of her.

Throw in there the lake picnic of which Jimi is the new vice president of the Lake Owners’ Association, swimming, walking, dog issues, gardening, oh what a garden we have!!!

Well let me post some pictures of some of the things mentioned and I will try to visit my blog on a more regular basis.  Enjoy the Summer while it lasts!!!

Our Bulldog Drama

Well, it has been a few weeks since my last post and a lot has happened. When we started out looking for a female, I had sent an email to the breeder we got Diesel from. She did not respond which was strange since we correspond a lot with updates and photos. Anyway, a couple of weeks before we were supposed to pick up our new puppy she wrote me. She told me that she did not know of any breeders but that they searched on the internet at a site called Puppyfind.com and found Diesel’s dad in PA and Mom in VA. Well there are many bulldog breeders in PA so I just asked non nonchalantly  if our new puppy’s breeders name rang a bell. Hubby got home soon after I sent the email and we went for a drive with the kids. Well, I got home to an email that it was the same breeder of Diesel’s dad.

To make a long story very short, Diesel and the new puppy are closely related. The new pups father is Diesel’s grandfather, no wonder she looked so similar to our Diesel. Our hearts were broken because we already loved the pup even though we never met her. We knew we could not breed them and that was what our intention was so we had to look for another female. After much searching we found more related dogs even way out in the mid west. We finally found our new princess Delilah. She has a totally different look than Diesel, much more Johnson but she is the sweetest little thing and a few days later we were able to travel to Allentown during Jimi’s vacation and pick her up. We are so happy with her and know this is meant to be and that their pups will be a great hybrid of the Johnson Scott types.

It was so great to be able to pick her up on Jimi’s vacation and I was thrilled that I was finally able to go to a “Tuesday Morning” store that was also in Allentown.  It was a beautiful day for a drive and the weather was sunny and warm.  Luke had a few rough spots because it seems all of his teeth have decided to make their debut at the same time.  Poor baby but he was still a trooper.  We were able to meet both parents and the remaining siblings but we still picked the one we had chosen over the internet.

So I guess it is as they say, “Alls well that ends well.”  At least we can hope and pray it is so.
