Ready To Assemble, RTA Cabinets Will Save You Money Without Sacrificing Quality and Style!!! #CurbAppeal

I’m excited to share something with you.  I have heard about Ready To Assemble Cabinets (RTA), but never tried them. When I built my home, I went to a full service kitchen designer showroom and all of my cabinets were custom-built and designed exclusively for my kitchen and my needs.  Along with that service came a pretty hefty price tag.

I know that it’s hard for most families to fork over a huge amount for cabinets and being that I had some projects going on that were going to include cabinetry, I thought it would be a good idea to try some RTA cabinets. I not only thought it would be great to see the amount you can save as well as judge the quality and ease of assembly but knew that my readers would appreciate the in-depth look.

There are many places you can buy RTA cabinets from and I knew some things going in.  First I wanted cabinets that had all wood construction without any particle board.  I wanted to deal with a company that provided upstanding customer service and I wanted the cabinets to look good, have nice features and be easy to assemble.  I didn’t want a nightmare with boxes sitting on top of pallets in my garage  because they were just too difficult to put together.  So, I was lucky to find CSH- Custom Service Hardware and work with one of their wonderful representatives named, Howie. Howie worked with me extensively, he never once said a word as I changed designs but came up with rendering after rendering of my ideas.

The first project we worked on was the laundry room, where we are adding some cabinetry and a 36″ stainless steel farmhouse sink for a sort of butler’s pantry.  I picked the Wheaton Cabinetry by JSI and recently we assembled them.  I want to share the assembly process of  2 of the units with you.  I will share an upper cabinet and a lower drawer unit. The upper cabinet is quite large as we went with a 42″ tall cabinet that is 27 inches wide.  The drawer unit is 30 inches wide.

Below you will find the description of the Wheaton Series Cabinets from the CSH Website:

These Wheaton Series kitchen cabinets feature all wood construction in a cream painted maple with a light brown glaze for a soft and traditional look. The full overlay, solid raised panel doors and matching drawer fronts add to the appeal. Some notable features include plywood sides, tops, bottoms and shelves, solid wood dovetail drawer box and full extension, soft closing, undermount drawer glides. Our easy assembly is perfect for those who love to DIY and save some cash!

JSI-Wheaton-Kitchen

Once the boxes are open the pieces should quickly be checked against your instruction sheet to make sure everything is there.  The Wheaton cabinets are a simple assembly using cam locks and some screws.  The cam locks are not what you find in particle board furniture you get at Walmart but a very easy device that is simple to secure.  Right out of the box we were impressed with the quality, the shelves are nice and thick and finished with a poly type varnish for durability as is the inside of the cabinet.  The cabinet doors are thick and substantial with beautiful details and finish on the raised panel doors.  The drawers are dovetailed and they are comparable to what I have in my custom Amish built cabinets that you don’t see even in many other custom cabinet lines.  They have heavy-duty soft close drawer glides not some thin metal glides like you may have seen elsewhere.  My husband and I were really impressed.

The cabinets were simple to assemble and took no more than 15 minutes from start to finish for the large upper door cabinet and since this drawer unit was our first it took a little longer to figure it out, but once we did it was a cinch and now we will be able to do the other drawer units in the same time as the upper cabinet.  We also went with decorative end panels for the exposed sides of the cabinets to give them a custom high-end look and Howie helped me pick out some great knobs and pulls.  I can’t wait to show you it all when we have it completely finished which should be in the next week or so but until then take a look at some of the cabinet assembly.  Let me know if you have ever used RTA cabinets and what your experience has been.

Dorfman Pacific, Scala Collezione Collection, Cadet Silhouette Hat Review!!!

dorfman pacific logo

Baby it’s cold outside!  The winter chill is in the air and your mother is right, you need to cover your head when you go out to stay warm.  So many women forgo the hat because they either feel they’re not a hat person or cannot find one that fits well and feels good.  Dorfman Pacific’s Cadet Silhouette hat is a very flattering, made with boiled wool and comfortable satin lining, it comes in an array of 10 fashionable colors to make every outfit pop while keeping you warm and protected in the winter wind.

Dorfman Cadet Hat

The satin lining is comfortable and the wool is warm but does not make you sweaty.  The hat is very versatile with many types of hairstyles and will fit nicely without destroying your style when you remove the hat.  The weatherman says we are in for a deep freeze so if that includes where you are, head over and check out the Cadet Silhouette at Hartford York.  The Cadet Silhouette retails for $30 which is very reasonable for such a high quality hat.

Why use Boiled Wool?

Boiled wool hats are the savvy consumers’ choice in weather resistant and fashion headwear. The eco-friendly process of altering the material eliminates the usage of harsh chemicals while effectively shrinking the wool. Subsequently, the heat traps air chambers, forming a natural barrier against hot and cold temperatures and wind. This technique matched with Dorfman Pacific’s keen eye for design and artistry creates the ultimate cold weather accessory. The felt like texture is softer, warmer and eliminates the itchy feeling associated with wool.

I was provided with a complimentary hat like the one mentioned above to facilitate my review.  The views and opinions expressed are 100% my own as always.

WHY STAINLESS STEEL? 86%t of plastic water bottles used in the United States end up in landfills, taking up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Americans are currently adding 30 million PET water bottles to our landfills every day. Transporting bottled water consumes approximately 1.5 million barrels of fossil fuels per year. Help reduce this number by carrying a refillable bottle. When you use a stainless steel bottle, your water remains free of unhealthy plastic residues.

Update On Our Home Rennovations & Peek At The Bathroom Faucets We Chose!!! #CurbAppeal

I’m feeling refreshed from some much-needed down time with the family. However, it’s full speed ahead into the new year and time to get the party started with our home renovations.  We’re midway through the laundry room renovations.  I know I haven’t mentioned them but we’ll be taking you through it all.  Right now we’re relocating electrical and plumbing to accommodate the design changes.

The rest of the demo in the master bath and reconstruction will be starting in a few days and so we have some updates.  We picked out our bath sink faucets and they arrived the other day. The sink faucets we choose are manufactured by KWC. They are part of the ONO collection and for the finish we went with Splendure™ Stainless Steel.

kwc_faucets_thumb

KWC Bath Faucet

kwc ono single hole faucet

KWC faucets successfully combine Swiss innovation with technology, precision and fascination. KWC is Water Performance.  We went with a single hole faucet for a few reasons. It’s much easier to clean with the single hole design, and we like the sleek, modern look and how it complements the sinks and the shower doors.  We were very impressed with the product when it arrived.  It was impressive even in the box, securely packed and protected, with quality we could see and feel.  We’ll be updating you as we move forward and show you the entire installation process.  We’re still finalizing the vanity and the whirlpool but must have that done no later than Monday!

So, I hope you’re ready for lots of home improvement in the new year!  I cannot wait to actually bring you our real-time projects and best of all the complete reveals!  I would love for you to comment on any projects you’re planning as well.

Pregnant Yogini, Amy Pastore, Continues To Practice Yoga, Listening Not To Critics, But To Her Inner Compass!

Amy Pastore has been practicing yoga for 20 years and teaching for over a decade.  Last spring, when Amy received the good news she was expecting, it never so much as crossed her mind to stop practicing yoga.  As you may imagine she has faced critics along the way, mostly in the opinions of  other moms who did not agree and were not shy letting her know what she should and should not be doing as an expectant mother.

Amy shakes it off and says she feels we all have an inner guide, she calls it her intuition. She believes this intuition is innate and always there for us to access if we’re willing to listen.  She believes that as a woman becomes a mother this inner compass will grow even stronger and so it’s important that she stays tuned in and follows its direction.

amy yoga 1

Amy is due 3 days from now on Christmas Day but she still practiced yoga today.  She acknowledges that as her body has changed and with her baby at full term, it’s very different from earlier in her pregnancy.  With her belly at maximum capacity, her center of gravity is changing as often as the baby shifts, causing her to be present in a very intuitive way.

You will not find Amy guided by the advice found in pregnancy books or a doctor and most of all not from opinionated mothers.  Instead, she is constantly moving from a place of feeling and sensation while understanding that well-meaning advice is coming from people who do not know her history, body or health better than she does.

RSPregnantYogaSlide5

Amy with her husband Freddy

Amy with her husband Freddy

She feels that there is a very basic knowledge that lets an expectant mother know what to and what not to do.  If something doesn’t  feel right, a mother will naturally protect her child inside and out.  She believes that if you’re moving from a place of feeling and intuition that with intelligence and care, you can and should continue your activities throughout your pregnancy.  When asked  what she thinks of those who disagree, Amy says she has no problem tuning them out, after all she practices yoga.

Amy and her husband, Freddy Pastore, are the creators of iflow Yoga and host teacher training and retreats locally and internationally. Amy generously shares with her students what has been valuable and what has worked for her from her vast experiences.

Her most important message to her students: “This practice is a metaphor for life, the mat is a mirror. Each time we come to the mat, it’s an opportunity to learn something about ourselves. Everything we learn on the mat we can take and apply to life.”  Amy is widely recognized and respected by her peers as a teacher dedicated to her practice and inspired by the love of sharing it with others. Oh The Redundancy!!! A Humorous Look at the Repetitive Nature of Advertising!!!

Back when I was a brand new mom, my mother me something after seeing the numerous issues of Child, Parents, American Baby, Baby Talk and Parenting magazine piled on the coffee table and throughout my house.  She said, “It’s great to have a subscription as a new mom but after a while you’ll see they just run the same articles again and again.”  Of course they do it with new pictures and a few word changes, but she was right!  She was right, even though I am sure I rolled eyes at that time.  I soon discovered she was so right and as the magazines filled with the predictable recycled articles filled my mailbox, they were immediately stacked or given a brief skim for any special offers before being donated to the pediatricians office.  Now, even though we read mostly in digital form you still see the same redundancy.

redundancy sign

The predictability of advertising and media can make me crazy.  How many of us wish for election day to come and go so the ugly lawn signs and the attack ads will stop.  Then we are bombarded with Black Friday ads and commercials that don’t just tell us of upcoming deals, but that we will never see prices this low, and we should leave our families at 6 pm on Thanksgiving Day to go out into insane crowds only to fight and scream while trying to buy presents for a season that is supposed to be filled with joy and good will toward man.

Black Friday

After that, we are bombarded with ads that Black Friday pricing is extended right through to Cyber Monday which turns into Cyber Week and then Green Monday and Gold Monday!  The message is to buy, buy, buy, because we will never see prices this low and that our family will love us more for the gifts!

black-friday2

The predictability keeps coming as the ads that air on Christmas Day tell us that we need to shop the next day and “get what we really wanted.”  Prices will never be this low!  Everything is half price!  Without a bit of reprieve we are thrust into resolution season.  We know as sure as the sun rises, we’re bound for a month of weight loss ads, articles, infomercials along with White Sales, and sales on organizers to clean up all the stuff we had to buy to make our families love us!

Then the ads for life changes starts, make more money, go back to school, get a new career, start a new business, stop smoking, stop drinking and more. After that, the Valentine’s Day Massacre starts.  He doesn’t really love you unless he gets you the eternity bracelet, ring, necklace (insert whatever piece of jewelry they’re promoting) from Kay Jewelers!  Let’s not forget the roses and that a proposal on Valentine’s Day is the way to go as long as he goes to Jared!  I won’t bore you but the cycle continues month after month and year after year.

proposal

Now, don’t misunderstand me, I don’t see anything wrong with someone wanting to make a new start in the New Year, but it’s  just the way we’re hit over the head again and again that drives me insane and is the reason I’m  glad I hardly ever watch TV.  However, that doesn’t shield me, the radio, the news, in the stores, everywhere I go it’s there.  I know why they do it, it’s because just like with the recycled parenting articles there is always a new mom reading it for the first time.  Alas, even though I know it is coming, it still makes me cringe.

redundant

It’s not that I don’t appreciate a good bargain, because I do, and I share good deals I find.  I just take offense to all the high pressure and words they use that make it sound like their target market is 2 years old.  As a person who is in the media and who works in advertising, promotion and marketing I feel that a change is way overdue for less hype, less predictability and more insight and fresh approaches.  Is that too much to hope?  Sadly, as I hear another ad on how I better hurry and get to Toys R Us for the lowest prices of the year on the toys my kids HAVE to have, I think it is!

Holiday Travel Essential Package For Baby Giveaway With Tortle & 2 Red Hens Diaper Bag!!!

TortleLogo_TM
Did you know that 1 out of 2 babies develop flat head syndrome and that it is totally preventable?  A pediatrician developed a product called Tortle,  this lightweight baby beanie can prevent flat head and even treat babies who have developed flat head.  Target.com will carry three Tortle designs; Blue Elephant, Pink Flowers and Solid White.  The Tortle beanies are available in medium and large sizes at a suggested retail price of $19.99.  You can follow Tortle on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to stay up to date with all the latest product news.

Developed by Dr. Jane Scott, a Board Certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist, the Tortle beanie is an FDA-cleared patented Class 1 medical device that promotes proper head and neck movement which is essential for appropriate development.  Tortle helps prevent and treat early stages of flat head syndrome: plagiocephaly (the flattening of the baby’s skull) & torticollis (unbalanced neck muscles). Tortle works by gently deflecting a baby’s head from side to side when they are sitting or lying on the back of their head.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends regular head repositioning of babies younger than six months.

Baby_2b

The incidence of Plagiocephaly and Torticollis (or Flathead syndrome) has increased to epidemic proportions since 1992 with more than a million babies being diagnosed with the condition each year in the U.S. alone.  This is due to their lack of movement and the amount of time infants spend on their back (the safest place for them to be).  If left untreated, there can be long-standing problems.  Treatment is frequently expensive and can be somewhat uncomfortable for a baby.  Plagiocephaly and Torticollis are almost 100% preventable with repositioning and Tortle makes this safe and easy.  It is recommended that all newborns wear a Tortle for the first 6 months of life to support healthy development.
