Top Reasons to Work From Home

Are you thinking about working from home? Loads of people are attracted to the idea of telecommuting because of its long list of benefits, from more time with the kids to a casual wardrobe. It’s a big decision that requires planning, but it’s not as daunting as it might seem. Consider these top reasons why you should work from home.

Flexibility

work from home

Undoubtedly one of the best reasons to work from home is flexibility. You’re the master of your schedule and can set your own hours. Are you a night owl? Carry on, Johnny Carson. Want to have lunch with your best friend? No need to check in with the boss. Take as long as you like.

With time for family and friends, creative ventures, and even travel, you can pursue a level of work/life balance that a regular 9 to 5 commitment can’t match. Just don’t let all this flexibility leave you crunched for deadlines.

Plenty of Opportunities

Today’s employers are continuing to embrace a variety of full and part-time telecommuting opportunities. From language translation services to medical billing, the global shift towards remote-friendly workplaces is on the rise.

Advertising is a key industry that offers a variety of ways to fulfill your dream of a nomadic work life, like influencer marketing. LinkedIn is touting thousands of available freelance influencer positions that help businesses connect with influencers, build PR programs, and track ROI — with lucrative starting salaries too.

Tremendous Income Potential

If you’re blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit, achieving success as a freelancer or remote employee is within reach. In addition to saving big on work-related expenses such as gas and office apparel, working from home might be a profitable venture.

Bloggers can earn $12,000 a year or more, while virtual assistants and graphic designers are raking in as much as $5,000 monthly from their home office. This level of control lets you set your income goals and may add up to a consistent, livable income.

Design Your Space

Just imagine your new work space. What comes to mind? Is your new office chair an overstuffed recliner or the picnic table in the park across the street? You don’t have to cram your remote office into a spare closet or the corner of your living room. Gone are the days of being tied to a clunky desk and secondhand rolling chair.

You can fit your office anywhere, and you’re not tied to your home either. Use your kitchen’s breakfast bar as a standing desk or take your laptop to your favorite coffee shop around the corner. Most libraries offer free Wi-Fi and a quiet environment that’s perfect for contemplating innovative ideas. Take your job on the road while traveling and never miss out on life again.

More and more people are choosing to work from home. For many, it’s a great fit and a lucrative career move. But it’s not a magic solution to the woes of the workplace. You still have to put in the effort to reap the rewards.

10 Time-Management Tips for Busy Parents

Let’s face it, most parents feel like their days are a game of beat the clock, and more often than not they end up losing. Trying to keep everything together and get that huge to-do list done can lead to frustration, losing your temper and feeling overwhelmed.

Life is unpredictable, especially with kids. Even when you plan, emergencies happen. You may not be able to avoid chaos altogether, but here are 10 Time Management Tips that can benefit busy parents. Following these tips can help bring order and peace back to your life and help you make the most of the time you have.

Prioritize

I cannot stress the importance of this, knowing what is a priority and what is not, is key to getting the things that matter done. Every day write your to-do list and prioritize your tasks into what you need to take care of immediately, what you need to do during the week and then your more on-going or long-term tasks

Delegate

This is so hard for some of us, but as a rule, if you can delegate a task that is not something you absolutely have to do yourself to a person that you feel will do it 80% as good as you would, delegate it. It doesn’t mean you are not a good mom if you don’t go up to the school to copy and distribute 1,000 fundraiser flyers. Let someone else do that, and it will free you up to do the things that only YOU can do.

Batch Tasks

Look over your to-do list and see what tasks you have that you can batch. This means if you have to go to the bank, post office, kid’s school and the dentist, try to do it all in the same trip. This saves time and gas money!

Get organized

If you are always running late because you can’t find something you need; it is time to get that under control. Get a filing cabinet for all your important papers, birth certificates, passports, insurance documents and more. Have your kids place all homework, library books, permission slips and other things in their backpacks each night. This will save frantic library book searches in the morning.

Have everyone lay out their clothing the night before. I really like these weekly clothing organizers for kids. Having your kid’s clothes picked out and organized for the week ahead, will make mornings less stressful.

Family Message Center

Install a family message center in a central location in your home. Make sure that everyone uses it to communicate what is coming up, post shopping lists,  permission slips and school papers that need to be signed, important reminders and more.

Use the Internet

I cannot stress enough what a time saver doing things online has made in my life I shop, pay bills, do research and more online. If you do have to go out to a store, check out their current sale flyer online and make a list of what you need to buy. Taking the time to do this, will get you in and out of the store faster without forgetting things. While online, you should check to see if there are any special coupons or promo codes that can be used in store.

Purge

Do a clothing and toy purge and make it fun. Promise the kids a treat like going out for ice cream, when you go to donate the purged items. This way you won’t drive around for months with those bags in your trunk. Trimming the excess from your lives will make you feel a lot lighter and make cleaning less of a chore.

Meal Planning

Plan your meals for the week. This will simplify your shopping and you won’t be running out all the time to get something for dinner. Use a slow cooker or pressure cooker, to help you get dinner on the table easier and faster than ever. Make extra when you cook to freeze and save, or check out some freezer meals you can make ahead for the whole week.

Assign your kids Chores

Giving kids jobs to do helps them learn responsibility and improves their self-esteem. Even little ones can help with certain tasks. You can use chore charts to make it easy for kids to see what their responsibilities are.

Learn to say No

This is so important, because our inability to say NO effectively, is the reason we end up with too much on our plate. It is okay to say NO, and to say it often. You can say, I would love to help set up the school book fair, but I just cannot take on any more projects right now. Once you say it a few times, it will get easier.

Following these 10 tips can help you bring some order to your life and save you time and stress. What are your favorite ways to manage your family and your time effectively?

Tips to Help Keep Your Kids Safe on the Internet

Your Child Will Be Exposed To The Internet

There are a wide range of threats to children online. These threats come in many different forms, from cyberbullying to identity theft schemes to predators who want to meet your child offline. These threats can be daunting and difficult to fathom, but with solid awareness and a plan to keep your child protected, your child can avoid most online pitfalls.

Your child is going to be exposed to the internet. In this day and age, it is unavoidable. Your child will be online at school, or at a friend’s house, and you won’t always be able to directly monitor them. You can’t prevent your child from being online, but you can instill good habits and keep tabs on their internet use in general. Here is what you need to do in order to keep your child safe when they are online.

Defining Safe Internet Use For Children

The first thing that you need to do is work to understand what safe internet use for children is. You should instill in your children that they need to keep their phone numbers, home addresses, and personal contact information offline. They shouldn’t talk to strangers online, and you should let your children know what types of websites are acceptable for viewing and which types of websites to avoid.

A child without direction could give away personal information to a stranger in a chatroom. If a child feels uncomfortable or that they made a mistake online, they should contact an adult they know and trust immediately. One easy way to keep you and your child’s personal information safe is through the use of a VPN.

Parents And Children Need To Stay Aware Online

There are new dangers popping up online each year, and parents need to know the dangers so that they can keep their children protected. There are email phishing schemes that seek to gain access to children’s personal information with a seemingly harmless email message. There are the risks of cyberbullying and pornography. Parents should stay aware of the risks and keep their children up to date on new potential threats online.

Tips For Parents

The good news for parents is that when children stay safe online, they can have a good time and learn more than if they were offline. The key is to establish rules early in the process so children know what is in bounds and what is off-limits. Make sure that your children use strong passwords and always log out of their email and social media accounts, so that they don’t allow access to the next person who uses their computer (such as at a school computer library).

Parents should always read the fine print on social media sites that their children join, so they are aware of the information that brands and other third parties can gain access to.

How to Talk to Your Kids About the Importance of Mental Health

This is a sponsored guest post, that may or may not express the views of Mommy Ramblings.

Years ago, mental health was more of a taboo subject, and people were more likely to hide their struggles.

Thankfully, we’ve come a long way as a society. Most people now understand that mental illness isn’t much different from physical illness. The brain is a muscle that we must nurture and exercise in order to avoid issues. Now for explaining this all to your kids…

Why it’s important to discuss mental health

According to data from the CDC, suicide rates are on a steady incline for the first time in over three decades, and one of the most concerning demographic group is girls between the ages of 10 and 14.

To be honest, no one is really sure why suicide rates have increased so drastically in this group, but one theory has to do with puberty.

If you have a teenager, you are intimately familiar with the way hormones can impact your child’s mood. And there’s a ton of research that links puberty with depression in both boys and girls.

To say the least, it’s a precarious time for the child and parent.

Opening the discussion of mental health can let your child know that it’s ok to feel down sometimes, but it’s also important to talk about your feelings.

More consequences of mental health issues

Suicide is a terrifying consequence of mental health issues, but it’s not the only one. Teens who struggle with anxiety and depression are more likely to experiment with drugs in an attempt to self-medicate. Not only is this a problem for teens, but it can lead to bigger issues in adulthood. No less than 90 percent of all adult addicts in the U.S. started smoking, drinking, and/or using drugs under the age of 18.

Tips for talking to your kids about mental health

  1. Start with the basics – Talk to your kids about mental health as it relates to overall health. Let them know that it’s as important to be mentally healthy as it is to be physically healthy, and there’s no shame in having mental health struggles.
  2. Have compassion for others and for yourself – If someone is or seems to be struggling with mental health, try not to take it personally or react in anger. Their actions are not this person’s fault any more than they are your fault. Have compassion. Treat this person with kindness to the best of your ability. The same applies to yourself. If you find that you’re struggling with mental health issues, show yourself some compassion. Try not to be hard on yourself.
  3. Talk about your feelings – If you notice you’re having a lot of negative feelings that you cannot control, don’t be afraid to get help. Let your kids know that they can talk to you about anything. If they don’t feel comfortable talking with you, let them know that you can make a counselor available to them. The important part is to talk to someone.

The topic of mental health should never be taboo – and your children should always know this. They should always feel comfortable talking to you about how they are feeling. And this is more likely to happen when you open the dialog. For more tips, check out this Parents Guide: How To Help Your Team Cope With Mental Health Issues. Let me know what you think, and if you have any tips to share, leave them in the comments.

3 Main Reasons Why Parents Should Write a Will

A will is a legal document that specifies who will acquire your real estate properties, cars, bank accounts, jewelry, and the like when you die. It is up to you to whom you will leave all of your belongings, just be sure that they are eligible to receive and that everything goes through a clear legal process.

As for parents writing a will and testament is not all about the properties, rather the assurance that your children will still be well taken care of when you are gone. You need to choose trusted people in your family to look after them in case anything happens to you.

Here are some of the reasons why parents should draft a will for their kids:

will image

To avoid family disputes

Will and testament disputes happen to even among the closest part of the family. Challenging a will implies that one party thinks he deserves more than what is written in the will, hence if one of your children challenge your will with your other kids, their relationship might suffer from irreparable damage and as parent, this is difficult to imagine. That is why, it is important that you properly and carefully write a will to make sure your children get equal shares of the property you’d leave and avoid any family disputes in the future.

To have a trusted guardian to look after your children

The most difficult task for parents when drafting a will is choosing a guardian for their children. It is really tough to decide on this matter, but you have to do it anyway. Your children’s future well-being is at risk when unexpected things happen to you. This is the reason why you need to choose a person who you think will take good care and love your children when you are gone. Also, it is essential to name a trustee, someone who will manage any properties you pass on to your children, in your will.

will photo

To make distributing assets easier

The problem about not having a will is that the probate court might send away inquiry letters to financial institutions to handle the deceased’s financial situation. Additionally, your relatives may be requested to give out financial documents. By writing a will and testament beforehand, you can prevent all the paperwork and footwork your relatives will exert. You will save them from all the hassle and stress that they might acquire from processing various documents. Having a clear proof of distribution of your assets for the court to see will be easier and more convenient for everyone involved.

It is your obligation as a parent to secure your kids future and drafting a will as early as now is the first step in keeping your kids safe in case something unexpected happens. Nobody knows what is going to happen tomorrow, so might as well be ready by securing a will.

Many people think that a will is unnecessary and just a waste of money, but no one knows the future and you can leave your kids behind in an instant. Would you rather leave them with problems or investments? As parents, we obviously know the answer.

Tips For Creating A Safe Nursery & Giveaway To Win A Fresh Air Crib Liner ™ by SootheTime

Part of the fun and excitement of planning for a new baby is decorating the nursery. Picking out the furniture, wall color, decor and of course the bedding for the crib make it all seem real.  With the controversy over the safety of crib bumpers, some new parents feel it is safer not to use them.  Even though they feel it’s safer without the bumpers, not many could deny, the cribs look empty without them.  Some bumper alternatives look strange and are not available with any coordinating bedding.

If you can relate to this, I want to share good news about the Fresh Air Crib Liner ™ by SootheTIME, part of the Just Born family. This crib bumper alternative is adjustable and fits most cribs with a mesh liner that locks in place and provides fresh airflow for baby.

Soothe Time

The Fresh Air Crib Liner ™ gives parents less to worry about while creating a safe and comfy environment for baby to sleep.  The Fresh Air Crib Liner ™ is now available at Target and they can receive a $5.00 rebate using this link.

Fresh Air Crib Liner Chevron

Fresh Air Crib Liner

Some other great tips for creating a safe and healthy nursery are to skip composite wood furniture because it contains formaldehyde, solid wood is the safer choice.  Organic crib mattresses are a safe sleeping option, but if you have a conventional mattress, you can cover it with a cover not made of PVC.

If you are painting baby’s walls opt for a zero VOC paint and paint as far in advance of baby coming home as possible so there is ample time to thoroughly air out the room. It’s best to go with a bare flooring like bamboo or cork  over carpet and make sure that you do not use products that are treated with Microban because it contains the chemical toxin triclosan.

If you’re using area rugs, washable rugs are best and if you do have carpet, vacuum often using a vacuum equipped with a hepa filter.  For accent decor and toys make sure that you are decorating with safe items.  Those vintage finds may look nice but what’s lurking in them?  Avoid using or buying anything containing BPA, Phthalates, PVC, Latex, Lead, and Flame Retardants.

With some careful planning you can create a nursery that’s safe and inviting for your new addition.
