The Very Real Mental Disorder of Pregnancy Addiction

Have you ever know someone who was addicted to pregnancy?  It’s very different from wanting a large family.  Women addicted to pregnancy are obsessed to the point that nearly every aspect of their life relates to wanting to be pregnant, trying to get pregnant or being pregnant.  Social media has fueled this addiction because now they can use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and more to search for ways to announce the pregnancypregnancy test

Pregnancy addiction is a real psychiatric disorder and women with the disorder will get pregnant over and over, even though they already are overwhelmed by the children they have.  The high comes from the pregnancy, making the announcement is such a high, they usually announce before the pee stick is dry.  Then the constant updates of morning sickness, cravings, belly pics, sonograms, names, big gender reveals and more.  This all leads up to the big day and the culmination of the big birth story.

pregnancy cake

Then without skipping a beat, they start discussing how long they will wait before becoming pregnant again and often post about the fact that they might be and asking their friends if they should test and then making them wait on the results. The reason this is so fun for them is because they feel like they are a star, they crave the attention and are usually very insecure and wanting to fill a void with the pregnancy.  This is something they can focus on and bask in the comments, praise and adoration of friends and family.  They can be neglectful of the children they have in order to focus their attention on connecting with social media about the pregnancy.

Psychologist and Psychiatrists describe pregnancy addiction and the constant need to get pregnant as much an addiction as substance or alcohol abuse.  Psychiatrists describe it as a mental disorder.  The women who suffer pregnancy addiction are usually stay-at-home moms without a job or career and feel being pregnant gives them a purpose and makes them valued.

pregnant woman

The women describe themselves as feeling feminine and womanly when pregnant and relish the adulation they receive because it makes them feel like the center of the universe.  Many women use the constant pregnancy as an excuse for not pursing any other interests, career or education.  They are insecure and uncomfortable with the thought of being outside their role as a mother.

pregnant-women

Other women are addicted to pregnancy as they feel it will save their marriages and that their husband will never leave them if they have lots of children.  They look at the children as something that will hold the marriage together like mortar and continue getting pregnant to avoid ever having an empty nest.  The children tend to be a buffer between the spouses and they lose touch of how to interact with their spouse alone.

pregnancy

The women feel an emotional rush when they think about getting pregnant and once pregnant the release of the hormone oxytocin makes them feel great.  They love the glow and the compliments they get when pregnant.  However, when the baby is born and the focus shifts, they often feel low and are obsessed with getting the feeling they had when pregnant back.  It makes no difference if they cannot physically care for their children, many addicted mothers neglect their children and focus on getting pregnant again.  They often will relish the newborn stage but as soon as the baby starts to become mobile they are deeply longing to be pregnant again.  Pregnancy addiction is a real disorder and women experiencing it should seek psychiatric treatment.

Do you know anyone that is addicted to pregnancy, let us know.

In honor of Mother’s Day and Aflac’s goal to help support the fight against childhood cancer, Aflac will donate $2 to the Aflac Cancer Center for every post or tweet of former Aflac Cancer Center patient Trisha Henry Gaffney’s inspiring story using #Duckprints.

Trisha Henry Gaffney’s Story

TH photo 2

On Valentine’s Day 1996, 19-year-old Trisha was diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive tumor usually found in the head, neck, hands or feet of young children. Trisha’s was the first reported case to occur in the right ureter, the tube connecting the kidney and bladder.

After going through surgery to remove her right kidney, ureter and a portion of her bladder, Trisha spent a year at the Aflac Cancer Center undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

Following her treatment for this rare form of cancer, Trisha Henry Gaffney was eager to put her health problems behind her. The last thing she wanted to do was dwell on the effects of her illness.

Trying to Get Back to Normal

Trisha was eager to get back to school, and in January 1997, she went back to Illinois ‒ where she was a student and scholarship swimmer at the University of Illinois ‒ to finish the last few months of chemotherapy.

Her treatment ended in April 1997, and she was ready to put her focus on all of the positive forces in her life. During her treatment at the Aflac Cancer Center, Trisha had started dating Andrew Gaffney, a fellow swimmer from high school. She had a big group of friends in Champaign, Ill. she looked forward to seeing again. In addition, she became a journalism major with the goal of focusing her energy on telling others’ inspirational stories of overcoming obstacles.

In 1998, a friend encouraged Trisha to visit the Cancer Survivor Program at the Aflac Cancer Center. The Aflac Cancer Center provides specialized, long-term follow-up care and helps identify and treat problems associated with the effects of cancer treatment to help survivors lead a full life, including school, work and a family of their own. However, the idea of going to even more doctors didn’t sit well with Trisha.

“You don’t want your cancer to define you,” Trisha said, “but as you get older, you realize it plays a much bigger part in your life than you’re willing to admit.”

Hearing More Bad News

After several years of going to general doctors for check-ups, Trisha finally made an appointment with the Cancer Survivor Program at the Aflac Cancer Center.

“After college, I devoted myself to my work and being normal,” Trisha said. “I put cancer behind me. Then it reared its ugly head at 32.”

During her first appointment at the Cancer Survivor Program, Trisha received her health records.  She was able to gain a broad understanding of her entire health history, including her treatments and the issues they could cause, called late effects.

After meeting with the Medical Director, Trisha went to a fertility specialist, who delivered some devastating news. The lab work showed Trisha’s chemotherapy and 23 radiation treatments had wreaked havoc on her body. Only one ovary was functional, and the radiation had damaged her uterus; she was approaching an early menopause, and she would not be able to carry a child.

“It’s devastating when you can’t have a family,” Trisha said. “I froze my eggs that year. I thought, ‘Screw you, cancer! I want my own kid.’”

After her sister’s best friend offered to be a surrogate, Trisha and Andrew, now her husband, became parents to Isabella in April 2013.  Isabella just celebrated her first birthday, and this Mother’s Day will mark Trisha’s second, thanks to the Aflac Cancer Center and its programs.

TH photo 1

The impact of the Aflac Cancer Center isn’t lost on Trisha. Without the intervention of doctors and nurses in her health, her life would be incredibly different. “If I hadn’t had my friend telling me to go to the Cancer Survivor Program at the Aflac Cancer Center,” Trisha said, “I wouldn’t have my daughter.”

How You Can Help

So please tweet and share your little hearts out for this great cause!!!  Now through Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 11), Aflac will donate $2 to the Aflac Cancer Center for every tweet/retweet, or post/share on Twitter or Facebook using the #Duckprints hashtag.

Master Lock “Protecting All That You Love and Care About” Sweepstakes” To Benefit American Red Cross!!! #MasterLockProtects 3

Master Lock Logo Thin

Recently, I was thinking about what the American Red Cross means to me.  When I think of the American Red Cross, I think about a warm blanket being placed on the shoulders of a disaster victim.  That simple gesture is what the American Red Cross embodies; caring, compassion, relief and assistance for those in need.

The Red Cross is there to help Americans affected by disasters, support members of the military and their families, to facilitate  collection, processing and distribution of life saving blood, provided health and safety education and development and to provide international relief and development.  My daughter started volunteering  in high school  for the Red Cross blood drives in our community.   She enjoyed working with them so much that it ignited a spark for community service she has to this day.

American Red Cross Helping Victims

The American Red Cross is one of the nation’s premier humanitarian organizations that was started by Clara Barton in 1881.  Clara Barton led the Red Cross for 23 years.  After disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes, I always see the Red Cross responding immediately to provide victims with their basic needs. The efforts of this organization helps to give those affected  a bit of security, comfort and care while  always treating them with the dignity they deserve in the wake of unspeakable loss.  Just the Red Cross symbol alone is a vision of hope, a symbol of love and  commitment to relieve suffering to those in need.

As a parent, I know the protection of my family is paramount in my thoughts and actions every day.  It gives me security knowing that companies like Master Lock  have been providing individuals the most innovative security solutions for homes, autos, bikes, storage security and more since 1921.  I remember my first experience with Master Lock was the combination lock on my gym locker.  I used that lock from elementary through high school and that made an impression even then about the quality of their products.

Tough-under-fire2

Master Lock is the recognized leader in padlock and security industries and is always setting the bar higher and producing the best products to help families live as safely and securely as we can.  In an uncertain world Master Lock helps us keep our belongings safe and secure with products that we can put our trust in.

Master-Lock-Love-Sweeps-Logo

Master Lock has a “Protecting All That You Love and Care About” Sweepstakes: Master Lock is helping consumers protect all that they love and care about in 2014, whether a precious pet, certain someone or prized possession.

Master Lock is kicking off a year-long initiative by asking consumers to tweet what they most want to protect using the hashtag #MasterLockProtects in exchange for a $1 donation to the American Red Cross and entry into their sweepstakes for the chance to win one of 28 great prize packs!

Master Lock will make an initial $10,000 donation to the American Red Cross and will donate up to $10,000 in additional funds based on consumers participation in the sweepstakes.

Master Lock’s generous donation will support the urgent needs of the American Red Cross mission, whether it is responding to a disaster, collecting lifesaving blood, teaching skills to save a life, or assisting military members and their families during emergencies.

Miss Lucy’s Monograms Large Insulated Lunch Bag Review & $25.00 Coupon Code Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

I recently received a custom monogramed lunch bag from Miss Lucy’s Monograms to review.  I picked the black with white detail large insulated lunch bag and I had it monogrammed with my initials in purple.  I was assisted with any questions every step of the way and it was an easy ordering process.  When I received the bag I was quite impressed.  It is a good size lunch bag, like a personal cooler and I just love all the detail.  The adjustable shoulder strap makes it easy to throw over my shoulder when my hands are full with other things.  There are so many pockets to hold smaller things, there is a large front pocket with Velcro closure, a zippered large back pocket and two side pockets.  There is a nice utensil zippered pouch that is very unique and a great thing to have.  The insulated interior is easy to wipe clean on both the lunch bag and utensil pouch.  The opening of the lunch bag has dual zippers so it is easy to get in and out of .  This is also great to use as a small diaper bag that will keep bottles, sippy cups and snacks cool when you are on the go.  I highly recommend this insulated lunch bag and I am very interested in the other products on Miss Lucy’s Monograms Webpage.

Saltwater Canvas Whale Beach Bag Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Helen Langone owner of Saltwater Canvas was so generous to send me one of their Whale Bags for me to review.  We were going on a trip to Florida and with our family, we always have a ton of stuff we are hauling.  I love this beach bag for so many reasons.  First it is huge, second it has so many pockets and my husband especially loved this feature.  We were on the go during our vacation visiting beach islands, going on cruises and with two toddlers and their gear in tow, this bag was up to the the task.  We never ran out of pockets to hold our drinks, bottles, sunscreen, sippy cups and much more.  The roomy interior seemed to never run out of space to hold the endless things we needed to cart along with us.

The bag is so sturdy and will remain open with nothing in it.  It is a mesh bag but is so firm and strong that it holds its shape, definitely not floppy or flimsy.  The mesh was nice because all the sand would sift right through.  The fact that it is machine washable really appealed to me since moms know to expect spills and the fact that you can just pop it in the wash, is priceless.  The interior zipper pocket was very handy and secure and the caribeaner was great to attach our keys.

The colors were great and very vivid.  I got many compliments on the bag throughout our vacation. The Whale Bag is super strong, so much so that we went on a pedal car ride around one of the islands, and I hung the loaded bag on a hook on the outside of the pedal car and it held up fantastically.

The straps are long enough to sling over your shoulder which is great when your hands are full with babies or kids.  I will be using this bag for much more than the beach.  It makes a great huge tote for trips and weekends away and to keep in the car for the kid’s stuff.  Thank you so much Helen for making such a great bag for families.

  • Holds 6 beach towels
  • 7 Colors to choose from!
  • Room on top for beach toys.
  • 9 supersized pockets hold your beach favorites upright & easy to see.
  • Secret zippered pocket inside for your valuables
  • 15″ tall & 15″ oval base

Featured in O Magazine

“And for the beach, this Saltwater Canvas tote (whale bag) has everything you could ask for: eight outer pockets, room inside for up to six towels, and a mesh construction that strains out sand. It stands upright by itself and flattens down for packing. Happy trails!”
O Magazine, June 2011

Tradewind Books, “On My Walk” Book Review & Give-Away!!! {Give-Away Ended}

Recently Tradewind Books sent me a book to review and one to use for a give-away.  They sent me the children’s book, “On My Way” by Kari-Lynn Winters and illustrated by Christina Leist.  I shared it with my 2 year old Luke tonight, and he just loved it.  It was such a fitting and relative book for us because we take a lot of walks, and live in the country.  This book follows a small child as he walks with his mother and his dog in the country.  Luke loved that the dog looked like one of our dogs, Delilah.  It was a great book because even though the words on each page were few, the content allowed us to talk about our own experiences.  For instance the child sees a frog and we talked about how we see frogs on our walks.  He was delighted  seeing  a little boy like him, seeing the same things he does, on his walk.  It was a short, pleasant read and was just perfect for spurring conversation in a toddler or pre-schooler.  The illustrations are charming and amusing, like when the dog is licking the boy’s ice cream cone.  We give this book 2 thumbs up, oh wait, 4 thumbs up!!!

excerpt:

On my walk,
my summer walk,
I hear a horse, clippity-clop, clippity-clop,
and a frog, frippity-frop, frippity-frop

Capturing Couture Camera Strap Review and Give-Away!!!

I was thrilled that Capturing Couture decided to sponsor a review and give-away on  Mommy Ramblings.  The other day I received a package and inside I found two black boxes with hot pink tulle bows.  What could be inside?

Well, I knew what was inside since I was allowed to pick whatever strap I fancied from their site.  I chose the Orchid Evening 2″ Camera Strap from their Silk Collection.  It is so beautiful!!

Beautiful colors of the sunset, golds, pinks, and purples give an exotic flair to a sophisticated black backdrop.

The Orchid Evening SLR/DSLR camera strap is made from 100% silk woven brocade. Featuring tones of fuschia, pink, lavender and golden flower patterns on a black base.

Features:✦ Comfortable neckpad with plush velvet surface

✦  Customized metal logo rivets

✦  Nylon webbing for ultimate durability

✦  Adjustable features for preferred positioning.

Size Dimensions:

✦  2” wide

✦  30-32” long with 6-8” additional adjustability

Care:

✦  Spot clean with microfiber cloth and water

I love the comfort of this strap, the padded velvet on the underside is very comfortable to wear.  As I wear my camera everywhere,  I really appreciate this.  It is beautiful and gives me a break from the boring DSLR black camera strap that is definitely not a fashion statement.  I think it is great that Capturing Couture (you can get direct to their website by clicking on the text link on the side of my blog) has so many great styles and colors.   Their wide selection has something for everyone.  Make yourself standout, whether you are an established photographer or weekend shutterbug these straps will make you feel like a star.
